Penfolds, Bin 169 Cabernet Sauvignon - Coonawarra 2022
Penfolds, 180 years of winemaking innovation.
Since 1844, Penfolds has been rooted in experimentation, curiosity and uncompromising quality. It is this pioneering spirit, still present after almost two centuries, that has made Penfolds one of the most famous winemakers in the world today. In 180 years of history, only 4 winemakers have succeeded each other at the head of Penfolds, 4 guarantors of a unique philosophy and style, of what could be called ‘the Penfolds imprint’. There is a common DNA to the whole family of Penfolds wines, but each one clearly expresses its own unique personality.
BIN 169 embodies a contemporary approach to winemaking, emphasising both regionality and the maturation of Cabernet Sauvignon in fine-grained French oak. Although the first vintage of Bin 169 dates back to 1973, it was not actually released until 35 years later, in 2008. This wine fully embodies the identity of Penfolds, while capturing the uniqueness and classic essence of its region of origin. It is also a testament to Penfolds' longstanding attachment to the vineyards of Coonawarra.
The 2022 vintage:
Tasting notes:
COLOUR: Lustrous cherry red with a dark magenta core.
NOSE: Youthful. Initially reticent. An aromatic uplift of pan scrapings laced with thyme/pink peppercorn/marjoram. The reds have it: primarily red fruits — cranberry, red cherry and pomegranate; aided and abetted by red liquorice, musk/Turkish delight. Scents of graphite, black olive (and cassis?) immediately remind of both variety and place. Well-handled oak is barely perceptible (83% new ?!) — the faintest suggestion of sandalwood/teakwood. With air and time more unfolds…
PALATE: Medium-bodied, tight. Very young — primal and fresh. What’s most noted aromatically on the nose reappears on palate — redcurrant, mulberry leaf, fig, fleshy blood plum. Not unexpectedly, more telltale Cabernet-correct graphite/lead pencil notes evident on palate.
