Château Smith Haut Lafitte, a cru that lives in symbiosis with Nature

In 1990, Florence and Daniel Cathiard fell in love with Château Smith Haut Lafitte. They purchased it with the firm intention of perpetuating the tradition of excellence of this noble wine. "Our philosophy can be summed up in one sentence: to do everything to ensure that each vintage, whether red or white, reflects our magnificent terroir." Here, everything is done to preserve a living and harmonious ecosystem. The 80-hectare vineyard obtained the 'Organic Farming' label in 2019.

Petit Smith Haut Lafitte is one of the second wines produced at the estate. Its aromatic profile possesses similar characteristics to those of the grand vin.

The sensory experience of Le Petit Smith Haut Lafitte 2022 is indeed intriguing; it exudes sweetness on the nose, yet reveals a savoury palate upon tasting. Despite its heightened ripeness, it never loses its way, instead showcasing an ideal freshness at every turn. The soul of this wine lies in its silky tannins, which maintain their softness despite their ample presence. For a fleeting moment, I thought I was tasting a Cabernet Sauvignon blend, rather than a Merlot-driven wine.

Deep plum colour, plenty of creamy fruits here, with a good dash of bitterness that adds focus and mouthwatering quality. This is again Cabernet dominant, with tension and freshness, excellent perfume as the wine unfolds and opens in the mouth. A savoury, lovely Petit Smith Haut Lafitte, shows how ripe things got in this vintage, but they are doing a great job of keeping the delivery measured, one to look out for. In the signature of the wine, all in balance. 15% new oak for ageing.

More Cabernet Sauvignon-dominated, the 2022 Le Petit Smith Haut Lafitte is 60% Cabernet Sauvignon and 40% Merlot that spent 14 months in 20% new French oak. It's even better than the Les Hauts de Smith and has gorgeous aromatics of black cherries, currants, scorched earth, tobacco, and graphite. This textured, medium to full-bodied, seamless beauty has ripe tannins, a layered, balanced mouthfeel, and a great finish. This matches, if not exceeds, the 2020.

Le Cabernet Sauvignon apporte un côté énergétique, végétal et fruité avec des notes de baies rouges. Bonne densité en bouche où le vin dispose d'une puissance soulignée, mais canalisée, qui va de pair avec la tension présente. The 2022 Le Petit Smith Haut Lafitte has a delectable nose as blackberry commingle with pencil box and light smoky scents. This coheres nicely in the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with more body and grip than the Le Petit SHL, and certainly more sapidity. Residual peppery notes on the finish leave the tongue tingling. Recommended.

Aromas of currants and blackberries with orange peel and rose petals follow through to a medium body with racy and polished tannins that go on for a long time. Vivid and energetic. Second wine of Smith Haut-Laffite. 60% cabernet sauvignon and 40% merlot. Give it two to three years.

The 2022 Le Petit Smith Haut Lafitte is a rich, heady wine. A blast of dark cherry, plum, licorice, menthol, chocolate, tobacco and incense makes a strong opening impression. This Cabernet Sauvignon-based blend is all opulence. I would give it a few years to settle down.

Beautiful nose, blackcurrant, vanilla, caramel, chocolate, tobacco, cherries, crushed stones, blue fruit and bramble fruits. Sleek and straight, nice acidity, but this is quite linear with the Cabernet really giving the backbone, length and overall structure. Feels a bit tense, but it does have texture too so it’s not austere or harsh, just strong. Really well built, delivering power no doubt, but keeping a soft juiciness underneath. Very medicinal - clove, liquorice, unmistakable Cabernet speaking here, but feels clean and well worked. Nothing sticking out too much with body, plushness and cool freshness. Good potential, really impressively constructed. 3.7p. Ageing 30% new oak.

The 2022 Le Petit Smith Haut Lafitte has a more backward nose than the Les Hauts. With coaxing, blackberry, loam and light flinty/smoky aromas unfurl from the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with edgy tannins lending freshness and tension, quite saline toward its airy Cabernet-driven finish.

A blend of 60% Cabernet Sauvignon and 40% Merlot aging in 30% new oak, the 2022 Le Petit Smith Haut Lafitte Rouge is deep garnet-purple in color. It gallops out with powerful notes of plum preserves, creme de cassis, and licorice, followed by suggestions of chargrill, cardamom, and iron ore. The medium to full-bodied palate delivers a solid structure of firm, grainy tannins and plenty of freshness to support the muscular fruit, finishing long with a mineral lift.

Belle énergie dans le bouquet du Petit Smith, ce qu'il doit certainement à ses 60% de Cabernet Sauvignon. Le vin est légèrement crémeux, friand et porté par des tannins compacts, légèrement serrés, qui offrent une touche tonique à l'ensemble du palais en étant idéalement secondés par la structure acide. Un vin sapide, salivant et revitalisant !

A more straight, focused, structured wine, the 2022 Le Petit Smith Haut Lafitte is 60% Cabernet Sauvignon and 40% Merlot brought up in a mix of new and used oak. It's a powerful, medium to full-bodied, structured Graves offering classic darker, almost blue fruits, some violet, floral, and graphite nuances, fine yet certainly present tannins, and a great finish. It's another clearly outstanding wine from this team.

The 2022 Le Petit Smith Haut Lafitte, the château’s Cabernet Sauvignon-based second wine, is gorgeous. It shows all the signatures of its big sibling in a more accessible style that will require minimal cellaring. Dark-toned fruit, mocha, cherry, plum, grilled herbs and licorice are nicely pushed forward. In a word: gorgeous. Drinking window : 2027-2037
