Michele Chiarlo - Barolo Cerequio Riserva - Barolo Ac. 2016

Michele Chiarlo, the iconic winemaker of Barolo

Michele Chiarlo has played a key role in the production of Italian fine wines and the international recognition of the Barolo appellation. His story as a wine producer began in 1956. From early on, he was convinced that the emancipation of the Piedmont hill has to be found in quality wines that highlight the greatest terroirs. In 1988, he bottled his first Cru of Barolo. Since then, he has never stopped fighting for this appellation and its great wines.

During his career, Michele Chiarlo has always followed his father's advice: "to be patient, make sacrifices but buy only vineyards in important positions". This led him to purchase the most prestigious crus in the Piedmont, including some parcels of Cerequio in 1988. Located between La Morra and Barolo, Cerequio is considered as one of the finest Barolo crus. It is shaped as a magnificent amphitheatre of vineyards where the soils, exposure and microclimate come together to create exceptional Barolos. 3ha of vines are dedicated to the production of Barolo Cerequio. During exceptional vintages, 0,5ha of them produce the unique Cerequio Riserva.

The 2016 vintage

The 2016 vintage will be remembered for a long time for its rare qualitative excellence. It was a harvest characterized by a climate that followed the normal patterns of the seasons, without meteorological anomalies, producing very healthy grapes and allowing them to reach a perfect and uniform ripening in classic times.

"The nose is extraordinarily complex, elegant and pleasantly fresh, with evident notes of red berries, chocolate, mint and very fine spices; it is also characterized by highly pleasant balsamic hints that are typical of this cru. On the palate, an outstanding structure, engaging silkiness and perfectly harmonious: its captivating aftertaste is persistent and fresh"

Dried flowers, red berry baked tarts, rose petals, patisserie elements. Clean, clear and sharp, this is focussed and amazingly taught on the palate. Tannins are present and firm giving the linearity to this - the straight core that drives the wine forward. It's not so expansive, the tension is so apparent still, but so well defined and really graceful. Feels sophisticated and oh so charming. Such amazing almost bitter, minty, freshness on the finish, the licks of stone, graphite, pencil led giving the salinity and minerality. Just such a gorgeous lingering impression that makes you smile. Mouthwatering acidity is up front and centre but it's cushioned and plumped by the tannins and freshness, not giving plushness but certainly adding depth. Amazingly well controlled, full of vivacity and scintillating tension.

From a tiny 0.9ha site in La Morra with 50 year old vines, this is a lovely wine packed with raspberries, dried roses, tobacco, savoury broth, delicate tannins, very much signature mature Barolo. With a tightrope of fresh acidities, white pepper and truffle spices, delicious, and could either be enjoyed now, or held for another few years. 36 months in large oak casks then another 24 months in barrel before release. Winemaker Stefano Chiarlo.

The 2016 Barolo Riserva Cerequio will be released in spring 2023. It is already a mature wine. Dried cherry, leather, cedar, mint, tobacco and worn-in leather are all signs of a Barolo that is close to peaking. The Riserva emerges from Chiarlo's oldest vines, planted in 1971. It sees a slightly longer period of time on the skins and three full years in oak.
