Borgogno - Barolo Annunziata Riserva - Barolo Ac. 2019

NEW WINE!

Borgogno
, located in the very heart of Barolo, represents the historical memory of the Langa and its great wines. For generations it is the loyal interpreter of a territory and heritage which are made up of unique values and knowledge, but always with an eye to the future. As the inscription in the centre of the wine cellar proudly declares:

“Nothing is immortal, except for a wine that is conceived in a slow, methodical, thrifty and stubborn manner. This is what we’ve been doing since 1761”.

Of Borgogno’s total vineyard holdings of 40 hectares, 16 are located in the municipality of Barolo. These are divided between 5 historical vineyards: Liste, Fossati, Cannubi, Cannubi San Lorenzo and San Pietro delle Viole.

A new vineyard has joined the family: the Annunziata vineyard. This renowned cru lies among the rolling, sinuous hills of La Morra, where the compact soil boasts a rich clay texture and excellent water retention. Here, the 0,9ha vineyard is cultivated like a secret garden.

The 2019 vintage

2019 was a year of traditional trends in the vineyard, but certainly not without surprises. In the vineyard, the vintage got off to a slow with a consequent delay in the start of the spring season. The beginning of April was characterized by important rains that helped to create an excellent water reserve in the soil, in perspective of summer season. Unstable weather continued until early summer. In June the temperatures got warmer and thanks to the accumulation of water in the soil, this led to a rapid vegetative development. 2019 was a hot summer, culminating in July with a new heat wave, which ended with even intense storms, but which fortunately did not cause damage to the vineyards.

Tasting notes:

Ruby red with garnet highlights. On the nose hints of red fruit, such as raspberries and cherries, together with light hints of spices. On the palate a pleasant acidity and fragrance that gives the typical freshness of Barolo from Annunziata M.G.A..A deep wine accompanied by fine tannins.

The most impressive of three excellent single-vineyard Borgogno wines being released solely through négociants on the Place. From the La Morra MGA this offers a nose full of fennel seeds, cherries and plums, lavender, white chocolate and almost Turkish Delight reflections. Smells amazing. Sappy and alive, but wow the texture and depth are off the charts, immediately filling and round, this comes in waves with bright, zingy fresh fruit, high acidity, juicy tannins with herbal edges and soft spices towards the finish. Complex, amazingly vibrant and so captivating. Coffee, toasted honey, sour cherries, gingerbread and rosemary. An incredible wine that is still compact and relatively tight, the tannins are at the fore presenting quite a firm structure, but this also has delicacy and elegance shining through. I could drink this all day long. Just 3,000 bottles being released from the estate bought in 2008 by Andrea Farinetti and the Farinetti family, who are also behind the Eataly empire.

Juicy, enjoyable, great quality, plenty of ripe but restrained red fruits, tobacco and slate, with woodsmoke, crushed rose petals and mandarin peel on the finish. Andrea Farinetti owner since buying this storied Barolo estate in 2008 (also known for the Eataly empire, putting this family right in the heart of the modern Italian hospitality industry). Simone Borsari winemaker. Organic farming at this vineyard located in La Morra.

(Barolo Riserva; 100% Nebbiolo; the first Riserva release from Borgogno to be sourced from 0.9 hectares of the 2.5 hectares recently acquired in the prestigious Annuziata MGA in La Morra; 14% alcohol). Incredibly complex aromatically and utterly beguiling. At first we have classic leather and cherry stone, then the dry herbal and more floral notes appear – rose petals, lavender and wild rosemary. There’s sandalwood and clove too. Ample and searingly fresh on the attack, this is massively framed but very open in texture with a great sense of layering and of fresh sapidity welling up from below like ocean up-currents sourced from the depths. Very tactile and with great tension and precision. Yet seriously succulent and juicy. The wine-making here is exceptional and it’s wonderful to see what it brings to this fantastic terroir for the first time.
