Borgogno – Barolo Liste Riserva - Barolo Ac. 2019

Borgogno, located in the very heart of Barolo, represents the historical memory of the Langa and its great wines. For generations it is the loyal interpreter of a territory and heritage which are made up of unique values and knowledge, but always with an eye to the future. As the inscription in the centre of the wine cellar proudly declares:

“Nothing is immortal, except for a wine that is conceived in a slow, methodical, thrifty and stubborn manner. This is what we’ve been doing since 1761”.

Of Borgogno’s total vineyard holdings of 40 hectares, 16 are located in the municipality of Barolo. These are divided between 5 historical vineyards: Liste, Fossati, Cannubi, Cannubi San Lorenzo and San Pietro delle Viole.

Liste is a vineyard of 6.75 hectares with a south to south-eastern exposure and an altitude ranging from 270 to 330 meters. Its soil is composed of calcareous marl, clay and sand and it has a microclimate characteristic of this most ancient part of the Langa. It produces a Barolo full of harmony and body, complexity and a vibrant tannin. A deep, tumultuous and vivid wine, it is the soul of Borgogno.

The 2019 vintage

2019 was a year of traditional trends in the vineyard, but certainly not without surprises. In the vineyard, the vintage got off to a slow with a consequent delay in the start of the spring season. The beginning of April was characterized by important rains that helped to create an excellent water reserve in the soil, in perspective of summer season. Unstable weather continued until early summer. In June the temperatures got warmer and thanks to the accumulation of water in the soil, this led to a rapid vegetative development. 2019 was a hot summer, culminating in July with a new heat wave, which ended with even intense storms, but which fortunately did not cause damage to the vineyards.

Tasting notes:

Intense ruby red with violet highlights. This Barolo recalls hints of red fruit such as cherries, plums and spices, such as pepper and liquorice, and notes of incense. On the palate, an astringent tannin combined with a marked acidity reveal great aging potential and great personality.

Old school beauty in Barolo, this is made to sink into, with melted sandalwood and cedar-infused tannins, lovely juicy, redcurrant, leather and roses, savoury, food friendly, with lift through the finish. These wines have a good reason for being on the Place de Bordeaux - not only is this an iconic label, but these three single vineyards Riservas are only released through négociants (just 3,000 bottles of each). Held back at the estate and now ready to go. Simone Borsari winemaker.

(Barolo Riserva; 100% Nebbiolo; though Borgogno own 6.75 hectares of the Liste MGA, very little of that make it into the Riserva; 14.5% alcohol). Intensely fruity and yet also the most delicate of the three Riservas from Borgogno in this vintage. Perfectly ripe pure red berries – loganberry and raspberry plucked from their husks and gently crushed. A little wild strawberry. But also an intriguing hint of tomato consommé and tomato stem. A wisp of smoke; the memory of the embers of the fire. Leather. Orange blossom. With more aeration, a note of truffle. Naturally sweet aromatically. This is broad-framed and ample on the attack, really pushing at the cheeks before the tannins grip and pull this back towards the spine. Glacial, crystalline and very pure and focussed. Plunge-pool cool at the core, but not the glassy coolness of a wide surface lake, more that of a deep well or a fathomless underwater cave.

One of three single-vineyard Borgogno wines being released solely through négociants on the Place. Situated in the Liste cru, north of the Cannubi area, the vineyard's higher altitude and cooler microclimate gives an expressive aromatic spectrum with wild strawberries and toasted herbs on the nose. It smells fragrant and expressive. White chocolate, sour cherries and violets. Round and filling, this has gorgeously pure fruit - red berries with mouthwatering acidity, almost a sharp zingy element to the fruit, sherbet-like, with plentiful but fine tannins giving a really massy mouthful but so charming and delicious. Like a big hug. Ends salty and stony. Lifted and bright yet still with layers of flavour and texture. It needs longer to settle no doubt but this is glorious. Just 3,000 bottles being released from the estate bought in 2008 by Andrea Farinetti and the Farinetti family, who are also behind the Eataly empire.
