Borgogno –Barolo Cannubi Riserva - Barolo Ac. 2019

Borgogno, located in the very heart of Barolo, represents the historical memory of the Langa and its great wines. For generations it is the loyal interpreter of a territory and heritage which are made up of unique values and knowledge, but always with an eye to the future. As the inscription in the centre of the wine cellar proudly declares:

“Nothing is immortal, except for a wine that is conceived in a slow, methodical, thrifty and stubborn manner. This is what we’ve been doing since 1761”.

Of Borgogno’s total vineyard holdings of 40 hectares, 16 are located in the municipality of Barolo. These are divided between 5 historical vineyards: Liste, Fossati, Cannubi, Cannubi San Lorenzo and San Pietro delle Viole.

Cannubi is the most famous cru, in the heart of the municipality of Barolo and the denomination, and it was mentioned in historical documents already in the 19th century, even before the birth of Barolo itself. It has an excellent terroir complexity, an extraordinary wealth of microelements and a favourable climate, which make this hill one of the most suitable ones in the world for grape cultivation. Borgogno has 1.30 hectares of vines with a southern exposure and an altitude ranging from 290 to 320 meters a.s.l., making an elegant and powerful Barolo.

The 2019 vintage :

2019 was a year of traditional trends in the vineyard, but certainly not without surprises. In the vineyard, the vintage got off to a slow with a consequent delay in the start of the spring season. The beginning of April was characterized by important rains that helped to create an excellent water reserve in the soil, in perspective of summer season. Unstable weather continued until early summer. In June the temperatures got warmer and thanks to the accumulation of water in the soil, this led to a rapid vegetative development. 2019 was a hot summer, culminating in July with a new heat wave, which ended with even intense storms, but which fortunately did not cause damage to the vineyards.

Tasting notes :

Intense ruby red. On the nose hints of red fruits, light spiciness and notes of peppermint. On the palate a full taste with a pleasant acidity, but at the same time an enveloping sip, silky tannins. A wine characterized by great structure and elegance.

(Barolo; 100% Nebbiolo; Borgogno’s plantings in this iconic MGA amount to 1.30 hectares, but little of that makes the selection for the Riserva; 14.5% alcohol). More intense still and, if anything, more classical. Very Borgogno with that combination of wild and more medicinal herbal notes. Eucalpytus, marjoram, clove (as with the Annunziata) and maybe a little fennel and even nutmeg. Juicy once again, but the layers are more compact and denser than in the Annunziata Riserva. Sumptuous and glistening in the mid-palate and that same sensation of freshness welling up from below. Texturally fascinating. This finishes with rose petals and blossom, a hint of patchouli too. A vin de garde (of course) but so accessible already for a Borgogno Riserva. The wine-making here is now on a whole new level. 98+

From the legendary Cannubi cru, this is one of three single-vineyard Borgogno wines being released solely through négociants on the Place. A fragrant, spiced and savoury nose offering so much aromatic complexity in terms of espresso, sandalwood, violets and chocolate. LIvely and bright but wow what a wine, this has a wall of tannins that hit you square on - massy, fleshy and ripe but so well controlled and with a softly chalky texture so that they're not too overwhelming or drying on the palate. Rich, full and wide, but finessed with delicacy in terms of fruit purity. Balanced and harmonious, so easy to like this. Strawberries, red cherries and juicy plums with some bitter orange accents. Yum. Just 3,000 bottles being released from the estate bought in 2008 by Andrea Farinetti and the Farinetti family, who are also behind the Eataly empire.
