Michele Chiarlo - Barolo Cerequio - Barolo Ac. 2021

Michele Chiarlo, the iconic winemaker of Barolo

Michele Chiarlo has played a key role in the production of Italian fine wines and the international recognition of the Barolo appellation. His story as a wine producer began in 1956. From early on, he was convinced that the emancipation of the Piedmont hill has to be found in quality wines that highlight the greatest terroirs. In 1988, he bottled his first Cru of Barolo. Since then, he has never stopped fighting for this appellation and its great wines.

During his career, Michele Chiarlo has always followed his father's advice: "to be patient, make sacrifices but buy only vineyards in important positions". This led him to purchase the most prestigious crus in the Piedmont, including some parcels of Cerequio in 1988. Located between La Morra and Barolo, Cerequio is considered as one of the finest Barolo crus. It is shaped as a magnificent amphitheatre of vineyards where the soils, exposure and microclimate come together to create exceptional Barolos. 3ha of vines are dedicated to the production of Barolo Cerequio. During exceptional vintages, 0,5ha of them produce the unique Cerequio Riserva.

The 2021 vintage:

Winter delivered its share of snow (up to 60 centimeters of accumulation). March was dry, with temperatures consistently above average, prompting an early start to the growing season. At first glance, it appeared we were heading toward another warm and accelerated vintage, but this would not ultimately be the case. Cooler conditions in April and May counteracted the early growth, restoring balance to the vines. From early June, a prolonged period of warm and dry – never excessively hot - weather began and continued into September, when daytime temperatures moderated. The dry, sunny weather, coupled with significant diurnal temperature variation, facilitated a slow and consistent ripening of the polyphenols and tannins. Harvest occurred mid-October with grapes displaying impeccable health and ideal ripeness – conditions this perfect are rare. Despite an initially unpredictable spring, the subsequent perfect weather patterns culminated in an outstanding vintage, earning the 2021 season a 5-star distinction for its exceptional quality.

Tasting notes:

The wine’s bouquet is already showing its distinctive character, complexity, and elegance, even in its youth. On the palate, it offers a tightly woven structure of fine, silky tannins, remarkable balance, and an extraordinary, lingering finish. The 2021 vintage, much like 2016 and 2010, promises great longevity.

The Chiarlo name is practically synonymous with Cerequio. Boasting a substantial nine hectares in this revered MGA, which straddles La Morra and Barolo, the family has produced a separate bottling since 1988. The 2021 starts out brightly, proposing red cherry, raspberry and rose. It uplifts before then grounding as it develops captivating earthy complexities of eucalyptus, ginger and ginseng. Similar duality plays out on the palate, where frisky acidity and a lightness in step belies sneaky density of raspberry and rhubarb. Fresh, chalky tannins cling in all the right places. Liquorice root and mint tea enhance the finish.Click to see full details

Dried herbs, dried roses, lean and savoury, fresh acidity that gives a cushion of freshness. This is thoroughly charming, medium-weight, mouthwatering on the finish, no need to wait too long to begin drinking. Stefano Chiarlo winemaker, from 1ha of 50 year old vines in the village of La Morra, first vintage 1988. Fermented in 55hl oak vats.

(Barolo; 100% Nebbiolo; from Michele Chiarlo’s 1 hectare holding in the iconic Cerequio vineyard; 14% alcohol). Much fuller and pulpier with more intensity and less vertical lift. Cerequio is less aerial, but richer and more polished and weighty. It is cool at the core, an impression reinforced by the sense of compact concentration. Serious and rather gorgeous with a darker note to the cherry and berry fruits. Very fresh and lithe and sapid with redolent Nebbiolo tannins – very fine – indicating its potential for longevity.

This is balsamic, with a touch of tile, licorice and some wild herbs. The palate is medium- bodied with tight, delineated and succulent fruit, firm tannins and lovely encompassing freshness. Very cohesive and integral. Better from 2026.
