Michele Chiarlo - Barolo Cerequio - Barolo Ac. 2018

WE ARE PROUD TO OFFER FOR THE FIRST TIME A GREAT BAROLO, FROM MICHELE CHARLO, ONE OF THE MOST RENOWNED PRODUCED IN PIEMONTE.

VERY LIMITED QUANTITIES

In 1956 Michele Chiarlo begins his adventure as a producer of wine. In years of hardship and misery, he understood that the road to the emancipation of the Piedmont hills was to be found in quality wine, beginning with the choice of vineyards and most suitable areas.
The first cru of Barolo bottled under the name of Michele Chiarlo dates back to 1958.
Michele expands the boundaries of the market for wine. He was among the first producers in Piedmont to believe in the success of Italian wine abroad. Beginning in the mid-1960s, he worked tirelessly to break down the doors of the markets of Northern Europe and the Americas, earning the trust of importers and consumers across the world.

In the 80', Michele Chiarlo acquired parcels of land which produce the finest Barolo crus : Cerequio, in 1988, in village of La Morra.

They own today 4,70 ha of this "cru", considered as one of the finest Barolo.

In 2011 Palás Cerequio is born, the first relais dedicated to the cru of the King of wines, alone at the centre of a fine Barolo vineyard.

Vintage Notes

“The 2018 vintage was characterized by a late winter / spring that experienced abundant snow and then rain: such conditions allowed the restoration of precious water reserve after a 2017 that experienced very little rainfall. The vegetative stage began in the usual period, but the months of May and early June have sternly put the winegrower to the test, requiring prompt interventions with anti-mildew treatments and suitable agronomic operations aimed at maintaining the grapes’ perfect health. The year continued with a hot and dry summer, but the abundant quantity of fruit required the elimination of excess bunches (thinning of 30-35%); this then allowed the ideal continuation of a balanced maturation. The ideal climate in the last weeks of the summer season and the mild days and cool nights of September determined a gradual maturation and the development of strong and elegant aromas. Harvest was carried out from October 6-10, reaping very healthy and perfectly ripe grapes (following the classic harvest period for Barolo). The wine expresses a fine bouquet, revealing strong characteristics of the terroir of origin, Cerequio: notes of menthol, small red fruits and sweet spices. The mouth is harmonious and fresh, persistent and characterized by a silky tannic texture. A vintage marked by elegance, definite aromas and outstandingly harmonious taste.”

Prune, violette avec des notes animales, de fusain, de gentiane et de fruits noirs frais. Acidité imposante et droite, une belle fraicheur, de l'énergie pour un vin qui laisse une trace animale en bouche. Reste toutefois élégant et frais. 100 % nebbiolo.

The Michele Chiarlo 2018 Barolo Cerequio opens to a pretty lacework of aromas with smaller berry fruits, crushed stone, rusty nail, pressed lilac or blue flower and a dusting of spicy licorice powder. The bouquet is vertical and tight, leading to a very precise succession of varietal tones that flavor the wine's polished finish. The Cerequio has ample power as well, with etched tannins that grip this Nebbiolo firmly to the palate.

This is extremely expressive on the nose, rich, nuanced cherry and raspberry aromas, some delicate perfume with rose, caramel and cola - such beautiful aromatics. A crystalline texture and purity of flavour on the palate full of ripe fruits - really a heady mix of juicy red fruits, cherries and strawberries but given grip by plump, plush, vibrant fruity textured tannins that really coat the mouth, silky, then velvety - totally abundant but the whole palate remains lifted with such freshness. Acidity is there but so is this cooling, liquorice, mint aspect with soft wood spice and toasty caramel notes. A mix of linearity and aerial delicacy while being so rich and fruity. Delicious.

Nice mix of deep, ripe red fruit and oaky spice. Medium-to full-bodied with a robust framework of tannin and a richly spiced, fruity finish. Needs time to integrate, but there’s a solid core to this. Try from 2024.

Forest berries, underbrush, rose and menthol aromas lead the nose along with a potpourri of varied spices. Hailing from La Morra in one of the denomination's top sites, the palate is a stunning combination of structure and finesse, delivering small red berries, baking spices and the vineyard's iconic minty accents framed in silky tannins. Licorice notes lingers on the finish. Drink 2025–2035.
