The 2019 Penfolds Bin 169 Cabernet Sauvignon is made from 100% Cabernet Sauvignon, all sourced from Coonawarra, and aged in French oak hogsheads (slightly larger than the classic Bordeaux barriques), 56% new, for 17 months. Deep garnet-purple in color, it needs a bit of coaxing to release unabashedly bold blackcurrant jelly, blackberry pie, and black cherry compote scents, leading to wafts of tree bark, crushed rocks, unsmoked cigars, and camphor. Full-bodied, the palate delivers a powerful core of black fruits, framed by grainy tannins and a lively line of acidity, finishing with compelling purity.
