Wynns - John Riddoch Cabernet Sauvignon - Coonawarra 2016

Since the first vineyards were planted by visionary Scottish pioneer John Riddoch in 1891, Wynns Coonawarra Estate has built a reputation as the Coonawarra region’s pre-eminent wine producer. With the longest-established vineyards in the region, Wynns’ history is deeply intertwined with Coonawarra. Over the past two decades, The vineyards have been meticulously rejuvenated, resulting in wines which capture the true essence of the region.
John Riddoch Cabernet Sauvignon is the iconic wine produced at this estate, one of the best wines produced in Australia, 100% Cabernet Sauvigon grown in "terra rossa" soils, a specific terroir of the Coonawarra region. It definitely deserves its place among the great wines of the world, and that is why we have decided to go for its distribution, with this first release of the vintage 2016.

ABOUT THE WINE
First made in 1982, the John Riddoch Cabernet Sauvignon was conceived as a flagship wine for Wynns. John Riddoch himself was a true visionary. Amongst his many achievements are the building of the Wynns Gabled winery and the establishment of Coonawarra Fruit Colony.
John Riddoch Cabernet Sauvignon is made in small quantities from the best available fruit grown on the estate's extensive Cabernet Sauvignon plantings in the heart of the terra rossa soil. It has become a definitive Coonawarra Cabernet Sauvignon, made only in years when grapes of extraordinarily high quality are available, using less than one percent of the top-quality Cabernet Sauvignon grapes.

ABOUT THE REGION OF COONAWARRA
Situated 450km from Melbourne, Victoria and 380km from Adelaide, South Australia, Coonawarra's fame hails from a natural soil phenomenon called the terra rossa, a low, cigar-shaped ridge of soil stretching 20 kilometres long and up to two kilometres wide. Meaning 'red earth', terra rossa topsoil is rich and free draining but it is also thin; five centimetres to 100 centimetres deep. It is one of the best soils in Australia for growing vines, and ideal for creating small, well-coloured berries which develop in optimal sunlight. The result is intensely-flavoured grapes perfect for premium wines.
Like many of the world’s great wine regions, Coonawarra's climate is cool and marginal. It is South Australia's southernmost wine region, positioned 80 kilometres from the Southern Ocean and cold Antarctic winds.
The vines of Coonawarra are assured a long, cool ripening period which builds the intensity of flavours slowly in the grape, creating a balanced acidity. The resulting wines are among Australia's finest for their richness, intensity, flavour and longevity.

ABOUT THE VINTAGE
A very warm and dry spring led to early flowering, veraison and harvest. The warm November temperatures were ideal for good berry set, necessitating extensive green harvest (thinning) for quality. The grape ripening months of February and March were influenced by a cold water “upwelling” off the coast, but overall, it was a warmer- than-average Coonawarra vintage. We describe our 2016 wines as being at the “fuller” end of our long-term Wynns Coonawarra flavour and style spectrum.

These John Riddoch wines are, with each passing year, more approachable, more supple and more lithe on release. Coonawarra has a reputation in Australia for producing extraordinarily long-lived Cabernet Sauvignons, which are not necessarily approachable early. Well. These modern wines buck that trend. The refined oak program has actually done something to support the fruit and elevate it rather than weigh it down—a result of many years of research and work by the Wynns team, particularly winemaker Sarah Pigeon. So, to the wine. This 2016 John Riddoch Limited Release Cabernet Sauvignon offers five spice, mulberry, raspberry salted licorice, clove, tobacco leaf, a hint of nag champa tobacco, jasmine tea and brilliant length—I wrote the note off the length. These wines should be measured by their balance, and their ability to age. In this case, also by its beauty as a young wine. Drink it now, but you're better served by exercising a little patience and drinking from 2026 through to the late 2040s and beyond.

Lots of lean muscle converts into flavour power: pure blackcurrant and chocolate, sage, plum and espresso, all bound in a graphite tannic grip. Coming from a drier vintage, the density of serious fruit weight equates to intensity, and the flavor clarity persists and resonates long after the last note strikes. Think of that final piano chord in The Beatles’ A Day In The Life. Captivating!

Deep purple colour with violet hue. Very expressive nose with distinct fruit reminiscent of blackcurrants, blackcurrant spurs, sweet elderberries, aromatic herbs, paprika powder, elegant toasting and mild spices. On the palate rich and ripe with mild acidity, matured tannins, elegant strucutre and good aromatic length, shows depth and elegant minerality in the aftertaste.

The class of it. This is cabernet at its purest and most authoritative. It tastes of cassis, cedar wood, bay leaves and mint, though the wide spread of fine-etched tannin and the brilliance of the finish is what really distinguishes it. Superb red wine

Deep crimson. Lovely pure blackcurrant elderberry herb garden aromas with hints of espresso/ roasted chestnut notes. Beautiful concentrated wine with blackcurrant elderberry chinotto herb flavours, fine-grained and plentiful yet vigorous tannins, superb mid palate richness and integrated roasted chestnut/ cedar oak notes. Finishes chalky firm with a long inky/ graphite plume. Made for the long haul. Powerfully expressive yet unforced wine with superb vinosity, richness, density and volume. Superb. The fruit derives from the V&A (Victoria & Albert) and Nursery Vineyards, both located on classic terra rossa soils. From a dry, mild to warm growing season. Wait a few years to let it unfold, 2025-2050.

Very dark and glowing crimson. Intense and concentrated. Really fine ripe fruit almost disguises a massive amount of tannin. Very well made with a great future. The opposite of syrupy, with lovely fruit. Jancis Robinson 17+

This is a very impressive and regal cabernet with a rich array of ripe blackcurrants, mulberries and blackberries on offer, as well as a cedary and gently chalky edge. There’s a very rich and powerful core of deep-set fruit, as well as a thread of rich chocolate flavor and a very polished, assertive core of tannin that holds super long. Try from 2022. Screw cap.
