Yalumba, The Octavius - Barossa Valley 2019

The Octavius, a unique australian wine produced from centenarian Shiraz vines

Yalumba, founded in 1849 and Australia’s oldest family-owned winery, has remained independent under the Hill-Smith family for generations. Their commitment to quality and innovation is evident in their control over the entire winemaking process, including their on-site Cooperage. The Octavius blends Shiraz grapes from six Barossa vineyards, with the oldest vines dating back to 1854, combining Eden Valley’s elegance with Barossa Valley’s richness and depth. With an average vine age of 111 years, 69% of this Shiraz is sourced from Eden Valley and 31% from the Barossa Valley.

The cool winter of 2018 combined with lighter than average rainfall set the scene for the 2019 vintage. This mild, dry weather through the growing season produced grapes with great flavour and concentration. Summer was full of sunshine and dry weather, creating ideal ripening conditions for these old Shiraz vines to produce wonderful, expressive Barossa fruit, with vibrancy, ripeness and balance.

Tasting notes:

Medium deep crimson in colour. Intense aromas of dark plums, black cherries and blackberry entwined with fragrant vanilla, spice, chocolate, black pepper and a hint of praline. Generously proportioned, balanced and rich, the palate swirls with blackberry pastilles, blackcurrant and sage. Hints of ginger and roasted nuts lead into smoothly honed, chocolatey and lingering fine tannins.

For anyone who has kept a keen eye on Yalumba, this is the brand’s big wine to watch. Much has changed since this big-framed Barossa Shiraz was first introduced in 1990, with winemaker Kevin Glastonbury altering the oak regime significantly, reducing the amount and varieties of new oak barrels. It enjoys long, slow maturation – over 19 months in 25% new French hogsheads and barriques, with the balance in older French 100-litre octave (eight-stave) barrels – which helps settle the heft of this stern old-vine fruit. Its strong body has muscular blackberry and myriad shades from the black fruit spectrum – black plums, cherries and dark chocolate – with high aromatic puffs of clove and violets. Held in check by a tight line of ironstone tannins and firm oak, but still supple enough to roll enticingly on the palate.

How Octavius has evolved over the last decade!  Once a massive hulking dinosaur, resplendent in its American oak armour, lumbering along through the ages, beloved of geriatric drinkers.  Nowadays, this wine is made from virtually the same fruit, but its oak regime is forward-looking, engineered for agility and not just sheer weight.  This suits Octavius exceptionally well because this 2019 is a thunderously successful wine with the most detailed and resonant fruit I have tasted under this label.  It is such a relief for this once-outlier in the Yalumba portfolio to finally join the rest of the mind-blowing reds.  In 2019 Octavius finally arrived, and it will thrill all comers.

The 2019 The Octavius hails from a warm and dry year. This is the new-release Octavius for Yalumba and comprises 55% Eden Valley fruit, the balance from Barossa Valley. On the nose, the wine is spiced and dark, with torched vanilla pod, salted licorice, blueberry and crushed rocks. The tannins are firm and clench a little through the finish, which is the hallmark of the season in Barossa, as far as I see it. This is a powerful wine that is savory and earthy. 14.5% alcohol, 6.2 total acidity, 3.56 pH, sealed under natural cork.

(Barossa Valley; 100% old vine Shiraz; aged in 100 litre French and American oak octaves; pH 3.56; 14.5% alcohol). Fresh, quite bright and lifted, with a lot of sweet baking spices accompanying the meaty, gamey, charcuterie and plum and dark berry fruits. Frangipane. Full, plump and plush, quite chewy with a lot of mid-palate matter and substance. A little incense, those sweet spices, assorted crushed peppercorns – red and black – and a little liquorice and grated dark chocolate. Grainy, fine-grained tannins pinch to release the fantail on the finish which is fresh, sapid and mentholated.

N°71 TOP 100 VINOUS

AH: "From one of Australia’s most historic wineries comes this confident 2019 old-vine blend of Eden and Barossa Valley Shiraz, including fruit from vines dating back to the 1850s. Classically proportioned, with brooding fruit power and seamlessly integrated strong, structural tannins, the 2019 Octavius Shiraz is a star in the making that will flourish for decades to come."

This stylish 2019 Shiraz, which is a blend of 55% Eden and 45% Barossa Shiraz, is beautifully layered with initial aromas of violets, sage and white pepper followed up by a rich vein of focussed licorice. Sturdly, and tightly bound with powdery tannins, a superb mix of bright fruit pastille and dark earthy flavours are underpinned by wood smoke.
Immensely complex and energetic, held tight and compact through to a finish of extreme length, this is benchmark Barossa Shiraz.
