Günther Steinmetz: Passionate craftsmanship on the Moselle slopes
The Günther Steinmetz estate in Brauneberg, Moselle, has been run by Stefan Steinmetz since 1999. This 12-hectare family vineyard is planted exclusively with Riesling and Pinot Noir grapes, grown on the region's typical schist slopes. The estate's philosophy is based on sustainable viticulture and minimalist, additive-free winemaking to preserve the integrity of the terroir. The wines are distinguished by their minerality, liveliness and ageing capacity, faithfully reflecting the specific characteristics of the Moselle terroir.
Wintricher Geierslay Kabinett
This wine is crafted from 100 % Riesling, drawn from one of the Mosel’s most esteemed parcels — the Wintricher?Geierslay — and reflects the estate’s hands-on, low-yield, terroir-driven philosophy. The steep terraces and silver-schist soils of the site are treated with the utmost care: manual harvesting, careful sorting, no artificial additives, spontaneous fermentation in large wood or steel. The outcome is a wine of remarkable individuality, natural purity and long ageing potential, created to express the full character of its specific vineyard site.
The 2024 vintage
Tasting notes:
The Wintricher Geierslay Kabinett 2024 from Günther Steinmetz opens with remarkably intense aromas of juicy mirabelle plum and Amalfi lemon. On the palate, its light, delicate body is perfectly balanced by a crisp, slate-driven acidity, creating a sense of both tension and harmony. The wine unfolds with crystalline purity and breathtaking complexity, leading to a refined, lingering finish. An elegant and vibrant Mosel Kabinett — delightful now, yet capable of graceful ageing.
