Dr. Loosen - Dry Riesling GG Bergweiler Prüm Erben, Wehlener Sonnenuhr - Mosel 2019

Weingut Zach. Bergweiler-Prüm Erben is Mosel winemaker Ernst Loosen’s exploration of the historical winemaking traditions of his family.

This singular project pays tribute to Ernst’s maternal great-grandfather, who was a major Mosel wine producer at the turn of the 20th century. Born in 1861, Zacharias Bergweiler built a substantial wine estate in the village of Wehlen and subsequently married into the other highly successful wine family of the village: the Prüm family. The wines are grown and produced according to the extremely patient and low-intervention practices used in the time of Zacharias, when German Rieslings enjoyed their greatest reputation around the world.

The 2019 vintage:

The 2019 Mosel Riesling vintage faced another year of extreme weather, marked especially by a severe August heat wave and prolonged drought conditions. Despite the challenges, Riesling’s resilience shone through, producing a lower-yielding but fully ripe crop with vibrant aromatics and pronounced acidity.

Scattered rains and cooler September temperatures helped the fruit ripen well, although late-September rains caused botrytis, requiring fast, selective harvesting. In the cellar, the wines show ripe density similar to 2018, but with brighter acidity for better structure. The result is a vintage with exuberant fruit, excellent balance, and strong aging potential.

There was only one German wine that achieved heavenly balance, and it was this off-dry Auslese from Erni’s epic cellar.  Drinking now, but with another couple of decades of acidity in the tank, this is a thrillingly pretty wine that is a timeless example of why these mesmerising vineyards make some of the greatest white wines on earth!

This has crazy, flinty minerality and terrific herbal freshness. The white peach aromas and touch of oak of this site slowly emerge as it aerates. Totally focused and energetic, this is only just beginning to show what it’s made of. Drink from release.

(12.5% alcohol; 1344 bottles produced). White grapefruit. Citron pressé. Fresh lemon. A little residual sugar. Melon flesh. This is vivid and vibrant and brilliant. A little lemon sherbet. Spritzy and zesty, long and radiant, fresh and rapier-like. Truly exceptional. 95.

Racy and bright on the nose, some dried apricot scents with honeyed vanilla and lemon. Smells gorgeous, so expressive and full. Alive on the palate, an instant zing of lemon and lime with a softly sweet element of pears and caramel with a bitter, almost herbal edge. Round and full but with a zing of zestiness around the edges stopping it from being too heavy or thick. I love that thick, oily creaminess balanced with the mouthwatering zestiness and delicious slate touches. Bitter orange on the finish. Serious and seriously drinkable. The second vintage for three wines in this range on the Place de Bordeaux that is an homage to the historical winemaking traditions of Ernst Loosen's family.

From vines planted in 1911 or earlier in the Laichen lieu-dit, Loosen's 2019 Wehlener Sonnenuhr Riesling GG Alte Reben is sylphlike, highly delicate and fine in its multilayered, fruity, floral and crunchy/flinty bouquet that reveals very fine slate aromas and even salty notes. Absolutely fabulous! Silky textured, lush and generous yet highly finessed, this is an intense yet subtle, pure and minerally fresh Riesling from one of the Mosel's finest vineyard. The finish is long, fresh, piquant and sustainably structured as well as salty. Irresistible. Tasted at the domain in September 2020.
