Poujeaux - Moulis 2022

The signature of the Cuvelier family

As the owners of Château Poujeaux, located in Moulis en Médoc appellation, for the last 15 years, the Cuvelier family have consistently sought to improve and enhance their Médoc estate. With a highly committed team, their philosophy is to preserve the values of family, people and high standards of quality, while seeking to bring out in the wines the terroir and all its complexity. Château Poujeaux is a dense, silky, complex and subtle wine, which faithfully expresses its terroir in each and every vintage.

The Cuvelier family also owns Clos Fourtet (Saint-Emilion 1st Grand Cru Classé B) and Château Côte de Baleau (Saint-Emilion Grand Cru).

The 2022 vintage

2022 was a fine, generous hot-weather vintage with excellent aromatic intensity. The weather conditions during the vine cycle brought out the diversity of the vineyard’s terroirs to magnificent effect. The June rains helped the vines withstand the ensuing water deficit stress of this very hot year. The blend offers a perfect, harmonious balance between the freshness and the structure of the Cabernet Sauvignon and Petit Verdot, and the softness and delicacy of the Merlot.

Château Poujeaux 2022 showcases a distinctive Cabernet Sauvignon profile, with spicy black pepper and characteristic licorice notes noticeable even before you bring your nose to the glass. The wine opens with a smooth, fresh-juice-like texture, and the finish is marked by a robust structure with a powerful and enduring aftertaste. The big variation in flavor from start to finish is pleasantly astonished. The meticulous refinement of tannins and velvety cocoa powder together shape a luscious structure for the wine. With the presence of Château Poujeaux, the Moulis-en-Médoc appellation has undoubtedly found its backbone. (This wine often has a reduction in its youth, ideal with a 1.5-hour carafe)

Has an old school heart to it, as is so often the case with Poujeaux, then opens deftly to show richly textured brambled blackberry and loganberry fruits, waves of cocoa-dusted almonds and liquorice root, acidity pretty high on the finish.

More charming and less austere than during the en primeur tastings, the 2022 Poujeaux has turned out very well today. Revealing a complex, deep bouquet of dark berries, cassis, spices, licorice and pencil lead, it's medium to full-bodied, concentrated and rich with a fleshy core of fruit wrapped in velvety, structured tannins, concluding with a precise, pure and dark berries-inflected finish. Matured for 18 months in a combination of new (30%) and used barrels, the oak is barely noticeable. This blend of 55% Cabernet Sauvignon, 42% Merlot and 3% Petit Verdot should age gracefully over the next decade and more.

Deep ruby-hued, the 2022 Château Poujeaux is based on 55% Cabernet Sauvignon, 42% Merlot, and the rest Petit Verdot. It offers a wonderful perfume of ripe black cherries and hints of cassis as well as sappy spring flowers and subtle tobacco. Medium to full-bodied, with ultra-fine tannins and no hard edges, this might be one of the greatest Poujeaux made. I would drink bottles over the coming two decades, but it will last even longer.

2028-2047 94/100

The 2022 Poujeaux has a succinct bouquet with touches of black fruit, gravel, seaweed, iodine and a light marine influence. It is very well defined and quite understated. The palate is medium-bodied with gentle grip and fine tannins fanning out on the finish. It's a little Saint-Julien in style. This classically styled Poujeaux will age well in bottle.

This is really structured and tannic, but the phenolics are very polished and creamy. You smell blackcurrants and minerals with fresh herbs, such as thyme and bay leaf. It's medium-bodied with firm, polished tannins and a long, intense finish. This will age beautifully. Excellent value for a cellar-worthy wine. 55% cabernet sauvignon, 42% merlot and 3% petit verdot. Wait until 2030 for this to soften.

The 2022 Poujeaux is quite the powerhouse. A burst of dark red/blue fruits, cedar, pipe tobacco, incense, new leather and licorice saturates the palate. Dense, potent and explosive, the 2022 is certainly not a shy wine. It captures the essential qualities of the year in its interplay of opulent fruit and energy. I would prefer to cellar the 2022 for at least a few years. There's a lot of wine here. Tasted two times.

Clean and crisp, but tight and compact, initially a gorgeous burst of blue fruit with cool stony edges, dense but refined, before quite firm tannins come into play. I like the energy, adds a touch of vibrancy to the fruit which is appealing before the really quite herbal and spiced tannins take over. Nice potential but not as generous and easy as some. Taught but purposeful. Harvest 15-30 September. Yield of 40hl/ha. 3.85pH. Ageing in French oak for 12 months, 33% new.

The distinct Cabernet Sauvignon character of Château Poujeaux 2022 is quite evident, with notes of pungent black pepper and characteristic licorice that can be sensed before even bringing the nose close to the glass. Upon entry, the wine presents a full-bodied juiciness and a powerful, vigorous finish with an unexpectedly colossal variation in mouthfeel, which left me pleasantly astonished.

The 2022 Poujeaux has a perfumed and delineated bouquet: copious black cherries and blueberry fruit, hints of pressed iris and violets. This blossoms in the glass. The palate is medium-bodied, very well balanced, impressive focus with fine-grain black fruit. This builds in the mouth. The 2022 Poujeaux certainly repays patience in terms of waiting for the sample to cohere in the glass. Ultimately, everything seems succinctly controlled and, who knows, it may well surpass a delicious magnum of 1953 tasted the previous evening. Tasted three times with consistent notes.

Deep crimson. Elemental cassis, cedar aromas . Fresh and concentrated with deep set blackcurrant, cedar flavours and brambly textures. Builds up very form and tight at the finish. Vigorous and a touch soupy but should settle down and develop. (Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Peit Verdot. About 30% new oak)

Deep garnet-purple in color, the 2022 Poujeaux is a tad broody and closed to start off, offering notes of tar, burnt rubber, and damp soil, before revealing a core of cassis, Provence herbs, and plum preserves. The medium to full-bodied palate fills the mouth with savory and black fruit layers, supported by chewy tannins and just enough freshness, finishing with an herbal lift.

The 2022 Château Poujeaux is mostly Cabernet Sauvignon but includes 42% Merlot and 3% Petit Verdot. A big, rich, almost massive Listrac, it sports a dense purple color, impressive notes of black fruits, chocolate, and crushed stone, medium to full-bodied richness, and a great finish. It might be the most impressive Poujeaux I've ever tasted. Tasted twice.

The 2022 Poujeaux is very beautiful. Silky, aromatic and elegant, the 2022 is flat-out delicious. Crushed red/purplish berries, mint, blood orange, graphite and spice are all beautifully woven together. Clean mineral notes extend the finish effortlessly. The 2022 is all class. It's as simple as that. Drinking window : 2025-2037

Licorice, flowers, tobacco leaf, cedar and blackberries, and spearmint form the nose. The medium-bodied palate is loaded with currants, blackberries, wet earth, and savory herbs, with a hint of olives on the fresh, chewy backend. The wine blends 55% Cabernet Sauvignon, 42% Merlot and 3% Petit Verdot, 14% ABV, 3.85 pH. Drink from 2025-2042.

The 2022 Poujeaux offers up aromas of cassis, plums, pencil shavings and sweet soil tones, followed by a medium to full-bodied, deep and concentrated palate that opens with a velvety attack, segueing into a firmer, more austere mid-palate and finish that depress my score. If this rounds out with élevage, my review will prove conservative.

A medium-bodied red with crunchy fruit and tight tannin structure. Juicy acidity coming through. Chewy and solid at the end. Closed and pretty tannins.
