Haut Bergey rouge (BIO-ORGANIC) - Pessac-Léognan 2022

The estate

The dedication of the Garcin family

In 1991, attracted by the potential of its land and the charm of its property, the Garcin family bought the Château Haut-Bergey. Under the management of Sylviane Garcin-Cathiard, the property underwent a vast rehabilitation, both in the vineyards and cellars. Since 2014, Paul Garcin has managed the domain, pursuing a path of organic and bio-dynamic winemaking production.

A unique vision in Pessac Leognan

Château Haut-Bergey defends its identity and values through its environmental practices. It is in fact the only estate in the Pessac Leognan appellation to be certified biodynamics, therefore the team invests a great deal of time and effort each year in their terroir. They proudly produce a vibrant wine that has the highest energy.

Successful, pretty, understated, takes its time to open, studded with black pepper and cloves, and attractive sage notes. There is fruit here too, although it dips a little through the mid palate. An attractive wine, tasted twice. Organic and biodynamic, gravel, sand, clay soils, 40ha estate.

The 2022 Haut Bergey offers up aromas of cassis, mulberries, flowers and iris mingled with delicate notes of cassis. Medium to full-bodied, round and juicy, it's well-balanced and framed by velvety tannins, culminating in a long, fresh and ethereal finish. This is a straightforward Pessac-Léognan, elegantly crafted.

I loved the 2022 Château Haut-Bergey both times I was able to taste it. It's a very pure, medium-bodied, elegant Pessac-Léognan based on 45% Merlot, 35% Cabernet Sauvignon, 12% Cabernet Franc, and 8% Petit Verdot. Black cherries, plums, spicy wood, and flowery incense notes all shine here, and it has fine tannins, a layered mouthfeel, and outstanding length. It's a hidden gem in this brilliant vintage that will evolve gracefully over the coming 15-20 years.

The 2022 Haut-Bergey has a light, earthy bouquet with brambly black fruit mixed with cedar and loamy scents. The palate is medium-bodied with grainy tannins, greenness on the mid-palate and some attenuation toward the finish.

Excellent depth and complexity at this stage, with black fruit and touches of violets, cocoa powder and minerals. Medium- to full-bodied on the palate, with slightly fleshy fruit. Fine, well-judged tannins deliver firmness and backbone before a lengthy finish. Drink from 2027.

The 2022 Haut-Bergey is a deep, bold wine. Strong stem inflections are front and center. Dark fruit, herbs, mint, chocolate and wildflowers open in the glass. The wine feels like it is in conflict with itself. It is at once very ripe and also heavily marked by stem inclusion.

Potent nose, smells perfumed and ripely fruited. Sleek and smooth on the palate with a grip to the almost chewy tannins. The fruit is a touch light, softly juicy with red berry flavours, but just missing some vibrancy, and together with the grippy, firm, mineral, slate and liquorice tannins it feels a little over extracted. 8% Petit Verdot completes the blend.

Medium deep crimson. Dark cherry, dark chocolate, herg garden, hint carob aromas. Soupy textured wine with ample dark berry fruits, savoury/ mocha nuances and fine dense chalky tannins. (Cabernet Sauvignon Merlot, Cabernet Franc 30%+ new oak)

The deeply hued 2022 Château Haut-Bergey offers a ripe, round, lush, and medium to full-bodied style as well as attractive plum and darker fruits supported by notes of wild herbs, violets, and lavender. With ripe tannins and plenty of mid-palate depth, this character-filled Pessac will benefit from 2-4 years of bottle age and evolve nicely over the following decade or more.

The 2022 Haut-Bergey is a dense, potent Pessac-Léognan. Super-ripe dark fruit, spice, leather and tobacco are front and center. In two tastings, Haut-Bergey has felt a bit overripe and pruney, but that could also be a slight oxidation in the barrel samples because of low sulfur. Tasted two times. Drinking window : 2025-2037

Smoke, flowers, cherries, espresso, and tobacco initially get your attention. The wine is soft, creamy, fresh and polished. There is sweetness to the berries with notes of chocolate, and espresso accompanying the fruits in the finish. Drink from 2026-2040.

From vineyards farmed biodynamically since 2018, the 2022 Haut Bergey reveals a lively and fresh bouquet of peony, violet, cassis and dark berries, as well as subtle hints of licorice and graphite. On the palate, it’s medium to full-bodied, succulent and supple, with a charming cure of fruit underpinned by bright acids, concluding with a youthfully structured finish.

A medium- to full-bodied red with beautiful dark and blue fruit and an array of fine grained, silky tannins. Refined and lingering. Very attractive and textural. From biodynamically grown grapes.
