Nénin - Pomerol 2021

The estate

On the eve of the 1997 harvest, Jean-Hubert Delon purchased Château Nénin, which had belonged to his cousins, the Despujol family, since 1847. A major restructuring was immediately undertaken.
The pruning and trellising methods were reviewed, the land was drained, the vines were replanted or uprooted, and the equipment modernized. The ageing and storage cellars were extended and completely re-fitted, and air conditioning was added. A new vat room, furnished with state-of-the-art equipment, was built thereby completing the total transformation of the property.

According to the Delon family, Château Nénin is the epitome of a great Pomerol "vin de garde" (wine for laying down). It combines power and elegance, complexity and balance, purity and refi nement. The gradual increase of Cabernet Franc within the vineyards gives the wine tautness, distinction and freshness. To really appreciate the Grand Vin's ageing ability, you may need to be patient. Like all great Pomerol vins de garde, Château Nénin blossoms over time.

The 2021 vintage

This 2021 vintage will remain uniquely complex. Both early and late. Indeed, although the mildness and humidity of the winter imposed an early, yet homogeneous budburst, this advance was lost during the growing season. The total investment of the teams was more than ever essential to limit the impact of various hazards and risks: once the impact of frost contained, the vineyard was then be preserved until the end of the summer, for a slow but complete and very qualitative phenolic maturation. The gravelly soil, especially on the plateau, played its role perfectly, forcing the vines to refine the suave maturity of the Merlots and the intrinsic elegance of the Cabernet Franc.

The 2021 Nénin is soft, curvy and ready to go, rushing forth with a burst of dark red cherry, blood orange, spice, menthol and cedar. Nénin is not the most potent or complex Pomerol for the year, but all the elements are impeccably balanced. In 2021, this is a wine of pure and total pleasure, a wine more for the senses than for the intellect. The creamy finish is a thing of beauty.

The 2021 Nenin is a decided overperformer, bursting from the glass with notes of dark berries, plums and cherries, complemented by exotic top notes of rose petals, violets, Indian spices and orange zest. Medium to full-bodied, fleshy and velvety, it's lively and polished, with a layered core of fruit and a long, perfumed finish.

Reserved in style, but the core of steeped cherry, red currant and blood orange flavors has excellent definition, while rooibos tea, sweet bay leaf and savory sparkles add range on the finish. Reveals a polished edge, which works well with the late tug of earth on the finish. Merlot and Cabernet Franc. Best from 2026 through 2036.  –JM

In bottle this totally lives up to En Primeur promise, with blackberry and damson fruits, crayon, iodine and grilled earth, with the signature of Nenin in its serious style. Captures the spirit of 2021 in the best sense. Harvest September 23 to October 4. 35% new oak, 3.53ph. No frost impact here, but 21 nights of fighting it through the early season.

More concentrated and darker-hued than many, some lovely Cabernet Franc fruit came in to help this wine enormously, and it has paid off with a finely balanced and long palate. Cabernet Franc is seen as a vital component at Nenin, and with young vines planted on some of their best soils, they have a guaranteed two-thirds-one-third ratio coming down the pipeline, which will surely future-proof this property. This slight shift in the blend brings depth and flamboyance to the party. Also, with the Merlot, they sought out fleshier red fruit parcels and more refreshing and keen-edged plots, and this decision has undoubtedly brought refined layering to the finished wine. In the greater scheme of things, this is a more forward vintage for Nénin, but it certainly has the power to last for two or three decades regardless. 18

Very fine tannins with a medium body and a fresh center-palate. Hints of spices and dried lemon peel. Bright and focused. Pretty fruit. Refined.

The flagship 2021 Château Nenin is terrific, coming from more classic Pomerol clay soils and based on 64% Merlot and 36% Cabernet Franc, resting in 35% new French oak. It's worth pointing out that this estate lies next to Trotanoy and Le Pin, so this is a fabulous terroir. A beautiful ripe, sexy Pomerol with lots of darker, almost blue fruits as well as notes of chocolate and damp earth, it's medium to full-bodied, has a round, voluptuous mouthfeel, and a great finish. This hit 13.3% alcohol with an IPT of 65.

Medium-deep colour. Intense dark chocolate elderberry, hint cola, roasted chestnut notes. Rich dark chocolate, raspberry, elderberry, al dente, inky density, chalky, some graphite notes. Quite chewy at the finish with espresso notes and very good structure. 64% merlot, 36% cabernet franc. 35% new French oak. 13.1% alc

Nénin 2021 does not win people’s hearts with its extraordinary aromas, but with its intricate body and balanced structure. The 36% Cabernet Franc skillfully fills the glass with the lively floral fragrance of violet and the sour and sweet scent of red pomegranate. It also releases an intense graphite-like, iron-like aftertaste on the palate. This is a very classic Pomerol of the vintage of 2021. 2021???Nénin????????????,???????????????????36%?????????????????????????????;???????????????????????????????????

Cherries, flowers, chocolate, and a baby hint of pineapple create the nose. On the palate, the wine is classic in nature with a firm accent to the sweet, crisp, ripe red and black plums. The wine blends 64% Merlot and 36% Cabernet Franc. Drink from 2025-2042. 91-93

The 2021 Nénin includes 36% Cabernet Franc this year, picked from 25 September until 4 October and raised in 35% new oak. There is plenty of blue fruit on the nose, a touch of crushed violet and Indian ink, quite forward and precocious for the growing season. The palate is medium-bodied with a velvety smooth opening, the new oak neatly integrated, fine acidity with a gentle grip on the finish where the Cabernet Franc subtle tobacco and slightly ferrous notes. Good potential. 13.31% alcohol

The 2021 Nénin is laced with dark cherry, plum, leather, spice, tobacco, menthol and licorice. Pliant and supple, the 2021 is a very pretty Pomerol with a good back bone of tannin and plenty of verve. Lovely.

36% Cabernet Franc, 64%. Dunkles Rubin.

I was immensely impressed by the quality of the 2021 Nenin, a wine that's the fruit of an immensely strict selection—and several consecutive nights of frost protection. Offering up aromas of sweet plums, wild berries, raw cocoa, black truffles and nicely integrated new oak, it's a medium to full-bodied, supple and velvety wine with lively acids, melting tannins and a layered, concentrated profile with a long, penetrating finish. Tasted twice. (93 - 94)+
