Bon Pasteur - Pomerol 2021

Winegrowing is a school of humility and rigor, subject to the whims of the climate and the laws of nature. Each new vintage is a challenge, a new adventure to be approached with caution but also with enthusiasm and confidence. The scenario of the 2021 vintage started out mildly with a certain amount of humidity, followed by a cold spell at the beginning of April which damaged our vineyards in a random manner. Although the vintage was average in terms of accumulated rainfall (789 millimeters) and temperature (13.8° C), the rainfall in May (102 millimeters) and June (166 millimeters) was well above normal. Since 1995, The averages for these months were more in the range of 60 millimeters.
However, flowering took place in good conditions thanks to a favorable weather window from 28 May to 3 June.
The vineyards healthy state and the return of milder weather conditions allowed a homogeneous and long veraison (color change).
The summer continued with temperate and frequently humid weather until mid-August. As is often the case in Bordeaux, the end of summer and the beginning of autumn proved to be beneficial to the vine growing. The last five weeks of warm, dry, and sunny weather finally brought the necessary hydric constraint for a quality maturation of our grapes.
The vintage was saved! At the end of September, once the optimum maturity was reached, we harvested all the plots carefully and precisely. Under less warm climatic conditions than the three previous vintages, Chateau Le Bon Pasteur 2021 is a dynamic, incredibly aromatic wine with a silky fruitiness from a Merlot and a Cabernet Franc that have kept all their freshness.

The 2021 Le Bon Pasteur is dark, rich and super-expressive. Large-scaled, ample and persistent, the 2021 is layered with red fruit, mocha, plum and spice. The resonant, textured finish and overall balance here are commendable.

Refined and integrated oak gives a classy touch to the fruit. Smoke, cigar box and hints of truffle, cocoa beans and sandalwood to the ripe cherries and blackberries. Medium body on the palate with fine, dusty tannins and a slightly chewy but very extensive finish. Give it one or two more years. Try from 2024 through to 2032.

Presents open-knit raspberry and plum coulis flavors that stretch out nicely over an ever-so-slightly grainy structure, while savory and red tea notes help fill in the background. Merlot and Cabernet Franc. Drink now through 2030. Tasted twice, with consistent notes. 1,000 cases made, 250 cases imported.  –JM

Rather too concentrated and sour, this is a very oaky wine, and the fruit is somehow a little cooked and raw for my taste. The oak is ridiculously over the top, too, so I will come back next year and hope for a change of recipe. 15.5?

This is a very balanced and pretty wine with ultra-fine tannins that are integrated and persist through the wine. It’s medium-bodied with lovely length and depth. A focused and thought-provoking wine for the vintage.

Tasted numerous times, the 2021 Château Le Bon Pasteur is a richer, more powerful wine in the vintage offering plenty of black fruits, graphite, and scorched earth nuances in a medium-bodied, nicely structured style. It has some background oak and will benefit from 2-4 years of bottle age. The blend is 80% Merlot and 20% Cabernet Franc, from a 6.6-hectare site planted on clay and gravelly soils. Fermentation is in a mix of tank and barrel, and the élevage is in 70% new barrels.

Plus en structure qu’en arômes, ce vin a du fond et du répondant, avec 20 % de cabernet franc qui marquent de la plus belle des façons la fin de bouche.

Deep crimson. Intense lead pencil/ cedar dark plum aromas. Generously concentrated wine with ample dark plum, blackberry fruits, plentiful cedary/ al dente tannins, superb mid-palate volume and fresh linear acidity. Finishes chocolaty firm with chinotto bittersweet notes. Masterful wine with very good density, fruit complexity and torque. 80% merlot, 20% cabernet franc. 18 months in 70% new and 30% seasoned oak. 13.5% alc

The wine shows ripe blueberry and cherry notes, accompanied by rich baking aromas. The melted-cheese-like tannins joined hands with the full-bodied texture, delivering a classic example of "great concentration in a cool vintage". Thanks to the mellow texture on the palate and the lush fragrance of spices, a satisfying wine with chewy structure is presented. I look forward to opening another bottle in 15 years and finding more pleasant surprises. ???????,???????,???????,?????????????,????????“???????????”?????????????????????????,????????????????15???,??????????????

Black cherries, incense, espresso, flowers and red fruits show with ease in the nose and in the round, soft, medium-bodied, elegant, plummy palate. The wine will take a year or two for the oak to fully integrate. Drink from 2024-2040. 91-93

The 2021 Le Bon Pasteur has a delineated and fresh bouquet with attractive blackberry and wild strawberry fruit and hints of wilted iris flower. The palate is medium-bodied with grainy tannins and substance, fine grip with a fresh and minerally finish. I tasted three samples over the course of three weeks, and concluded this is a great success in a challenging vintage. Whilst in the past I have been critical of this Pomerol, this is an unexpected surprise that I look forward to re-tasting once in bottle. Tasted three times with consistent notes.

The 2021 Le Bon Pasteur was impressive both times I tasted it. Vibrant and deep, the 2021 offers up generous red cherry/plum fruit, rose petal, spice, mint and licorice, all with a sense of exoticism that is hard to miss. There's a feeling of real energy and vibrancy I don't recall seeing here previously. The 2021 is one of the best vintages in recent memory. Sadly, yields are just 20 hectoliters per hectare. What a pleasant surprise the 2021 is. Don't miss it.

One of the most brutally oaky and extracted wines I tasted while spending over a month in Bordeaux, the 2021 Bon Pasteur exhibits aromas of berry liqueur, rich spices and creamy new oak, followed by a full-bodied, bitter and astringent palate that assaults the tongue and gums with vigor. In a ripe vintage, the quality of tannins can somewhat mitigate this old-fashioned style of winemaking, but in a less propitious year such as 2021, the results are disastrous.

Concentrated and intense on the palate in terms of depth of flavour - the blackcurrant, black cherry and damson fruit to the fore but set against firm, grippy and quite dense tannins that coat the whole mouth giving a liquorice, spice and slate tone to the palate. It's on the fuller end of the vintage and instead of delicacy you get a good dose of vibrant fruit power and tannic backbone. A bold and characterful wine, really quite abundant with all the individual elements on show. Still super-youthful, with swagger and pent up energy at this point. Lots of potential. Tasted twice
