The 2021 Larrivet Haut-Brion stands out distinctly this year, foregoing the use of Merlot and instead comprising a blend of 79% Cabernet Sauvignon and 21% Cabernet Franc. Evoking aromas of flowers, iris, violet and a touch of green pepper, it’s tense and straight with an austere grip that segues into a carnal finish. I suspect the presence of Brettanomyces in this wine, characterized by meaty hints and a rather firm finish.

I think this is the first Larrivet Haut-Brion with no Merlot that I have ever tasted, and I find it very convincing from the performance of en primeur. The 79% Cabernet Sauvignon and 21% Cabernet Franc blend creates a natural and crisp aromatic atmosphere, with crunchy and luscious berry fruit aromas and a silky body structure on the palate. Flowers, strawberry, currants, herbs and a touch of cigar smoke create the nose. Medium-bodied, vibrant, fresh and elegant, the refined palate is fresh, spicy and refreshing on the mid-palate, which is also elegant, lifted and refined. This is quite successful for the vintage. The wine is made from 80% Cabernet Sauvignon and 20% Cabernet Franc. This is the first time in the history of the estate that the wine was produced using only Cabernet in the blend. The yields were quite low at 20 hectoliters per hectare, which is as you can guess, is due to the lack of Merlot this year. 2024-2045. 91-93

Expressiv und sehr komplex, verführerisch, duftig, Blüten, Gräser, Brombeeren, Cassis. Im Gaumen frisch und lebendig, sehr balanciert, die Frucht ist knackig, auf den Punkt gereift, die Tannine von sehr guter Qualität. Langer, frischer Abgang. Assemblages non réalisés. Première fois que le domaine ne rentre pas les merlots dans l'assemblage. Nez de murier, de groseille, de violette, de fruits noirs frais avec une pointe terrienne et racinaire. Violette et iris à l'aération. Bouche juteuse, fraiche, de beaux tanins structurants et soyeux pour un Larrivet sur l'allonge et la rectitude, ce qui lui sied à merveille. Très salin et élégant. 90-92+
