Clos Marsalette Rouge - Pessac-Léognan 2021

The Von Neipperg Family, a history intertwined with winegrowing

The custodian of some 800 years of winegrowing tradition, the talented Stephan von Neipperg manages the Bordeaux estates acquired by his fatherin 1971: Château Canon La Gaffelière et La Mondotte, 1er Grands Crus Classés B de Saint-Emilion, Clos de l'Oratoire, Saint-Emilion Grand Cru Classé, Clos Marsalette, Pessac-Léognan, et le Château d'Aiguilhe, Castillon - Côte de Bordeaux

Ably assisted by a team of professionals, he has brought the wines from these châteaux to the pinnacle of quality. The upcoming generation, also deeply attached to the terroir, is preparing to perpetuate the family vocation...!

Clos Marsalette, Pessac-Leognan

Located in Martillac, in the Pessac-Léognan appellation, Clos Marsalette is jointly owned by Count Stephan von Neipperg and Didier Miqueu.

This vineyard sits magnificently on gravelly rises deposited aeons ago by the Garonne.

Clos Marsalette's vineyard which covers an area of 12 hectares for the red wine is looked after expertly in order to produce a wine reflecting the typicity of this Terroir. Clos Marsalette red is round, fruity, and distinguished.

The 2021 Clos Marsalette is bright and punchy, with tons of Cabernet character driving the feel. Savory and mineral notes abound. Dried herbs, menthol, licorice and lavender are finely sketched in this mid-weight offering.

This has a lot to like, with a vibrant mix of white peach, yellow plum and chamomile notes laced with flashes of shortbread, lemon curd and salted butter. The long finish keeps good tension, with a quinine accent lingering prettily. Lovely. Sauvignon Blanc and Sémillon. Drink now through 2030. 350 cases made.  –JM

Absolutely stunning on the nose with hints of spice from the new oak overlaying a red cherry theme and a silky-smooth mid-palate with so much charm and composure it is remarkable. With (almost) Pinot-like texture and brightness, this is an immediately harmonious wine with charm and a forward-drinking feel. I can see fans of this property flocking to this crowd-pleasing yet incredibly authentic flavour. I am impressed. 17.5

A fruity and reserved wine with orange peel, dark berries and some chocolate. Medium-bodied with medium, round tannins. Nice brightness.

As to the red, the 2021 Clos Marsalette has lots of red currants, hints of blue fruits, tobacco, and leafy herbs to go with a medium-bodied, round, nicely textured style on the palate. It has ripe tannins, terrific purity, and just a classy, balanced, satisfying style.

Nez puissant, fruits rouges, bois fumé, rose ancienne, bouche veloutée et vigoureuse, aromatique avec des tannins francs et une bonne suite. De la présence. Tonique.

Clos Marsalette 2021 is very elegant, with a fresh, arresting fragrance and definitive palate. Although the aromatic intensity is not that exceptional, it can still impress me with its adequately ripe polyphenols and gentle body. Definitely a pleasant Pessac-Léognan. Fresh, sweet, ripe, red fruits with tobacco leaf on the nose. Medium-bodied, soft, fresh and vibrant, with a crisp, chewy edge and a touch of salinity and cocoa in the finish. The wine blends 54% Cabernet Sauvignon, 45% Merlot and 1% Cabernet Franc. Drink from 2023-2034. 89-91

The 2021 Clos Marsalette was picked September 22 to October 10 and matured in 25% new oak. It has a fragrant bouquet of blackberry and blueberry fruit, nicely defined, plus a touch of violet. The palate is medium-bodied with soft tannins, perhaps just missing a bit of weight on the midpalate. Drink over 6–8 years.

The 2021 Clos Marsalette is attractive and nicely spiced, all in a mid-weight style that will offer fine near and medium-term drinking. The aromatics are quite pretty. Crushed red berry fruit, mint, spice, sage and lavender are all laced together. There's lovely freshness and fine balance here.

The 2021 Clos Marsalette is an immensely charming wine, bursting with aromas of sweet berries and plums, followed by a medium to full-bodied, fleshy palate that's vibrant and enveloping, its powdery structuring tannins cloaked in a lively core of fruit.

Lovely raspberry and herbal scents on the nose. Supple and generously fruited, the tannins are juicy and fine and this really gives some crushed stone nuances and lingering liquorice spice that rests on the palate. It's linear and defined with nice clarity of flavour, balance and sappy texture. Driving and persistent - still quite a lot of tension here, accentuated by the spiced core, but there's freshness throughout giving such mass appeal. Tasted twice.
