The dedication of the Garcin family

In 1991, attracted by the potential of its land and the charm of its property, the Garcin family bought the Château Haut-Bergey. Under the management of Sylviane Garcin-Cathiard, the property underwent a vast rehabilitation, both in the vineyards and cellars. Since 2014, Paul Garcin has managed the domain, pursuing a path of organic and bio-dynamic winemaking production.

The defense of a unique vision in Pessac Leognan

Château Haut-Bergey defends its identity and values through its environmental practices. It is in fact the only estate in the Pessac Leognan appellation to be certified biodynamics, therefore the team invests a great deal of time and effort each year in their terroir. They proudly produce a vibrant wine that has the highest energy.

2021, the resilience vintage

2021 did not spare the vineyard, especially the April frost. In order to preserve the highest quality of the harvest, the teams kept only the first generation buds, thus reducing the final volume. The estate's teams are guided by their commitment and values, and to keep up to them, 2021 required the most total risk-taking, from the vine to the bottle. The high quality of the wines, characterized by their vivacity, juicy fruit and balance, is a reward for the hard work and resilience of the teams.  
In order to preserve the bright fruit and to offer wines that are accessible from their earliest youth, the wines are aged in amphorae, fudres, one-wine barrels and concrete eggs.

The 2021 Haut-Bergey comes across a bit muddled on the nose and misses the typicité one expects. Oddly, there is something almost Burgundian here. The palate seems to have some residual sugar and exhibits some CO2. I am sorry…this just comes across as fau

Deep crimson. Intense sweet dark cherry, cassis aromas with vanilla notes. Sweet and savoury wine with plentiful sweet dark cherry, blackcurrant, blackberry fruits and fine loose-knit chalky textures. Finishes inky and drying. 55% cabernet sauvignon, 20% merlot, 15% cabernet franc, 10% petit verdot. 14 months in around 30% new French oak.

Joli nez de fruits noirs, de réglisse, de graphite avec un nez moins éclatant que les millésimes précédents. Juteux, frais, légèrement velouté pour un vin élégant et frais. Attention toutefois, ce vin a été dégusté 4 fois dont 3 bouteilles avec des soucis.

A promising effort, the 2021 Haut Bergey delivers aromas of rich berry fruit, plums and spices, followed by a medium-bodied, nicely balanced palate. If it continues to flesh out with élevage, it should land toward the upper end of my bracketed score.
