Franc Mayne - Saint-Emilion Grand Cru 2021

Château Franc Mayne, a real gem to discover in Saint-Emilion!

It was a case of love at first site that launched a new chapter in the history of Château Franc Mayne. Seduced by the charm of this 7-hectare property surrounded by vines and the promise of a wine that could be improved, the Savare family took over the management in 2018.

Having already held investments in Bordeaux’s vineyards for more than 20 years, they have found the same commitment, values and expertise that are crucial in their own industry. This triptych enabled the family company to become a world leader in fiduciary printing. Undertaking the same quest for excellence, the family has laid the foundations for a long-term commitment to this Saint Emilion Grand Cru Classé.

Personally involved, the new owners bring fresh drive and energy which has its origins in a two-fold motivation: to create a wine with a strong personality that reflects the richness of the terroir, and to maintain the property as a unique setting where one can experience the essence of the world of wine.

Key Points
- In organic conversion since 2019
- Very limited production
- In constant evolution for the past 20 years
- Good quality wine and well rated

2021, a challenging vintage full of lessons

The delicate conditions of spring and early summer exacerbate the characteristics of the different terroirs, their failings for some, but above all their strengths and their extraordinary complementarity. A gold mine for our understanding of the vineyard in this penultimate year of organic conversion.

Our 100% Merlot grape variety responded well to these later and cooler conditions than previous vintages. Technological (sugars and acids) and phenolic (aromas, colors, tannins) maturities are in phase.
The harvest takes place from September 23 to 29. And thanks to the very precise work of the pickers, the quality of the vatted grapes is perfect.

Tasting Note:

“The wine presents a sharp violet color with purple reflections. It has a nice intensity. The nose opens with notes of cherry, peony and iris, then enriches with a spicy hint of pepper, cocoa, to finish on a greedy milk jam touch. The wine is both fleshy and precise on the palate. The attack is ample. A fine and tight tannic frame, with a beautiful density stretches on a fresh and persistent finish. The notes of kirsch and fresh cherry are back, completed with a discreet hint of blood orange”.

The 2021 Franc-Mayne opens in the glass with aromas of ripe mulberries, dried rose petals, baking chocolate and subtle spices. Medium to full-bodied, fleshy and seamless, it has an ample core of fruit framed by powdery tannins that assert themselves on the discreetly firm finish.

A medium-bodied red with tight-grained tannins and pretty clove and savory bark notes. Fresh yet structured for the vintage. Nicely layered.

Red plums, tobacco, and some loamy earth notes emerge from the 2021 Château Franc Mayne, a medium-bodied, fresh, focused, and nicely balanced Saint-Emilion. Based on 100% Merlot, it shows the elegant, more mid-weight style of the vintage yet has lots of charm and character.

Deep crimson. Elderberry, dark plum, graphite aromas with inky notes. Concentrated and vigorous with abundant elderberry, dark plum fruits, fine assertive/muscular tannins, savoury oak notes and attractive mineral length. Finishes firm and bittersweet. Dense but sinewy wine. 100% merlot. 16–18 months in 50% new oak and 50% seasoned oak casks. 13.5% alc

The overall aromas are relatively simple, but the powdery tannins and rounded mouthfeel are still a wonderful expression of the Saint-Émilion clay-limestone soil (with a bit of sandy soil). The palate is compact and dense, with mellow, creamy tannins, and a firm structure at the finish. I’m expecting a good performance after aging. ????????,???????????????????????????????????(????????)???????,??????,????????????????????

Flowers and black cherries come through on the nose. Soft, round and polished, with a nice sweetness to the fruits on the medium-bodied palate, and in the soft, creamy finish leaving you with a solid wave of cherries and dark chocolate. Things are definitely on the upswing here. Drink from 2024-2040. 90-92

The 2021 Franc Mayne has quite a backward bouquet, though it is well defined and cohesive, featuring attractive black cherry and bilberry fruit laced with undergrowth. The palate is medium-bodied with sappy red fruit, slightly granular in texture, and quite pure, leading to a lightly spiced finish. This is promising.

Bravo !

Exhibiting aromas of plums, dark berries, rose petals and loamy soil, the 2021 Franc-Mayne is medium to full-bodied, seamless and layered, with lovely depth and concentration, tangy acids and a long, penetrating finish. In style, this is elegant and understated, but it has plenty to say too.

Cassis and liqueur touches on the nose, smells concentrated and intense. Juicy with the high acidity on show on the initial impact with raspberry leaf and strawberry juice to the fore before the liquorice and graphite tannins come in and surround the palate. I like the cooling touches - clear Cabernet markers with a lifted and aerial feel with a long finish. It has enjoyable elements and a sustained depth on the mid-palate. Refined for the vintage.
