Fieuzal rouge - Pessac-Léognan 2021

Château Fieuzal, a wine set apart

Château Fieuzal is one of the jewels of this great wine region of Graves. It is one of the most esteemed Graves wines, which comes from the four centuries-old talent exerted by winegrowers who love their profession on an exceptional terroir.

Through their vision and philosophy, the owners - the Quinn Family - and their technical director - Stephan Carrier - have set Fieuzal apart; a wine whose quality improves year after year and therefore deserves special attention.

2021, an atypical vintage

2021 is atypical, following the pattern of "1" vintages.
The climatic conditions were totally extraordinary, with a very challenging and highly stressful growing season leading up to the late harvest.

"The vintage possesses a sophisticated yet untamed character that is emblematic of 2021. There is a wildness and authenticity to the finest wines, which have sought to respect and express the place where they were cultivated.
The color is light purple and intense. On the nose there are aromas of redcurrant, tangerine and light notes of white pepper, brought by both the Cabernet Sauvignon and Petit Verdot.
On the palate, there is freshness with a nice tension and length. There is a subtle saline touch that stands out on the finish with tannins that are elegant and precise." Stephen Carrier, Winemaker

The 2021 de Fieuzal is a powerful, savory wine. Black cherry, dried herbs, licorice, incense and chocolate show very good depth and intensity. There is some burliness in the tannin, but that is typical of the year, especially in this appellation.

The 2021 de Fieuzal, a blend of 50% Merlot, 40% Cabernet Sauvignon and 10% Petit Verdot, has an expressive, sensual bouquet with aromas of blackberries, blackcurrant, rose, licorice and spring flowers. Medium to full-bodied, elegant and refined, pure and crystalline, it’s perfectly balanced with a sapid, tense and ethereal finish. Gourmand and charming, this is a superb rendition of sandy, gravelly soils. Keep it over the next decade.

Red cherries, cranberries, currants, grapefruit and smoked tarragon. A simpler, fruity delivery this year with medium body and firm, fresh tannins. Remains juicy and crunchy and shows early appeal. Drink now.

Correct and balanced, and while not a particularly complex wine, there is little to fault here, and the future is certainly bright for this wine. There is plenty of fruit, so it will not run out of puff either. The oak is quite brusque, but it should melt into the fruit before too long. 16

Lovely finish to this polished and fine-tannined Fieuzal with red fruit, medium body and a juicy finish.

The 2021 Château De Fieuzal is a broad, medium to full-bodied, wonderfully pure barrel sample offering lots of red and black fruits, notes of flowers and herbs, ripe tannins, and outstanding length. It should be an outstanding wine as well, and while it shows the fresher style of the vintage, it brings plenty of ripeness.

Fieuzal 2021 is like a juicy and crunchy strawberry pie. I did have my doubt regarding the harvest time on September 23 initially, but it disappeared the moment the fresh liquid seeped into my palates. It is hard to believe that it has created such a fresh palate with high-propotion Merlot. Pure, elegant, and well-structured, combined with silky tannins around the palate, it presents me with a paradise of fresh fruit. Espresso, dark cherries, smoke and plums shine through on the nose. Soft, lush, rich and fruity, with sweetness, length and a supple-textured, fresh, vibrant, ripe, earthy finish. This is already quite charming. But it also has the ability to age and evolve for 12-15 years. Drink from 2024-2037. 91-93

The 2021 Château de Fieuzal has a fresh nose of black cherries, blueberry and violet scents, plus a touch of melted tar. The palate is fresh on the entry with slightly chalky tannins, attenuating just a little toward the finish. Fine salinity, though not a long-term de Fieuzal.

A acheter absolument. Bravo ! 94-96+

An attractive blend of 50% Merlot, 40% Cabernet Sauvignon and 10% Petit Verdot, the 2021 de Fieuzal offers up aromas of plums and raspberries mingled with hints of rose petals and sweet spices. Medium-bodied, ample and polished, it's a supple, seamless wine with a pretty core of fruit, lively acids and impressive length on the finish. Congratulations to winemaker Stephen Carrier and consultant Thomas Duclos for this compelling Pessac. Tasted three times.

A lovely rich tone to the nose here, concentrated and lively. Freshly picked cherry and strawberry fruit give a hit of sharp, brightness before the chalky texture envelops the palate and curtails the forward motion. The acidity is excellent and this has the potential to be quite lively but the structure is taking the fore at the moment with an austerity that brings the wine to a close fairly swiftly though the minerality and coolness gives a long impressive finish. Well constructed with polish and lots of potential. 5% Petit Verdot completes the blend.
