Lespault-Martillac Rouge - Pessac-Léognan 2021

The 2021 vintage

"Born from a complicated vintage, Whites and Reds are still very classy
This 2021 vintage will go down in history for two climatically opposed reasons: A chaotic climatic and viticultural season, severe frosts and heavy rains
favoring mildew.

A real training for all of our vineyards, on the way (conversion) to organic farming!

An extraordinary end to the season, for the maturity and the harvest,
under the great anticyclone, allowing two great successes, in White as in Red" Olivier Bernard

2021 Tasting Notes - Lespault-Martillac Red, AOC PEssac-Leognan

Beautiful deep color, dark red, and brilliant.
Intense aromas of ripe red and black fruits. Leather, cocoa and spices. Graphite and fresh gravelly earth for the mineral side. On the palate, the wine is pure, ample, velvety and concentrated. It is generous in taste and energetic, which gives it an intense radiance of ripe fruit. A nice structure of fine, ripe
tannins gives a silky tactile sensation that continues on the finish.
This racy, balanced and round wine provides a delicate and immediate pleasure that characterizes its typicality

The 2021 Lespault-Martillac is a potent, savory wine. Dark cherry, plum, spice, leather, cedar and dried herbs are nicely layered. The 2021 is a bit compact, but it has good energy and plenty of character. Give it time to emerge. Tasted two times.

Evoking aromas of spices, tar, pencil lead and baked dark berries, the 2021 Lespault-Martillac is medium-bodied, round and fleshy with a delicate, somber character and structuring tannins. It is crafted from a blend of 60% Merlot, 27% Cabernet Sauvignon and 13% Petit Verdot, which is one of the most important percentages of this grape variety ever used in the wine.

Roasted red pepper, mineral, currants and chili chocolate. Textured, juicy and fluid on the palate, showing good intensity of fruit from this lighter vintage. Layered and extensive finish. Drink or hold.

Gentle in feel, with soft damson plum and red cherry notes infused with hints of black tea and singed cedar. Savory-flecked finish. Without grain, but rather sedate. Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Petit Verdot. Drink now through 2026. 2,000 cases made.  –JM

I loved the 2021 Château Lespault-Martillac, a ripe, textured, balanced wine that excels in the vintage. Based on 50% Merlot, 45% Cabernet Sauvignon, and the rest Petit Verdot, resting in 50% new oak, it has beautiful density and depth as well as notes of blue, almost black fruits, tobacco, scorched earth, and graphite. My money is certainly on this being an outstanding wine.

Nez expressif sur les fruits noirs, le silex, les fleurs suaves. On retrouve ces arômes dans une bouche fondante, énergique et équilibrée. Bien fait et élégant.

I cannot emphasize too much that ripeness is the key to the 2021 vintage. Through late-harvest and vigorous selection, Lespault-Martillac presents us with ripe polyphenol outshining others of the same vintage. It boasts not only a round and rich body, but also delicate tannins. If everything goes right, it will once again be listed among the most cost-effective Pessac-Léognan wines. ?????????,????2021??????Lespault-Martillac??????????????????????????????,????????,?????????????????,????????Pessac-Léognan????????????

Currants and black cherries, smoke, and tobacco leaf on the nose is what you notice before you find all the soft, bright, savory, earthy, leafy and olive tinted red pit fruits on the chewy palate. Drink from 2023-2029. 88-90

The 2021 Lespault-Martillac has a fragrant, well-defined bouquet with blackberry, blueberry and iris flower. Nice mineralité here. The palate is medium-bodied with chalky tannins. Moderate weight, a little sharp at the moment though its élevage will soften its edges. Fine salinity on the finish. Give this 18-24 months in bottle.

Delivering aromas of smoky berries, plums, loamy soil and toasty oak, the 2021 Lespault-Martillac is medium to full-bodied, seamless and charming, with velvety tannins and a sapid finish. This fine effort is a blend of 60% Merlot, 27% Cabernet Sauvignon and fully 13% Petit Verdot.
