Ferrière (BIO-ORGANIC) - Margaux 2021

Gonzague & Claire Lurton Estates, a family history

Claire Villars Lurton and Gonzague Lurton both come from great Bordeaux winegrowing families: the Merlaut family and the Lurton family. In the early 90's, at the age of 32 and 26, these two forces of nature proudly took over their family estates: Château Durfort Vivens, 2nd Grand Cru Classé in 1855 in Margaux, Château Ferrière, 3rd Grand Cru Classé in 1855 in Margaux, Château Haut-Bages Libéral, 5th Grand Cru Classé in 1855 in Pauillac and Château La Gurgue in Margaux.

In the Bordeaux world of Grands Crus Classés, Claire and Gonzague are pioneers in organic farming, biodynamics and now in agroecology and agroforestry. Convinced that the vines can become resilient and autonomous through a meticulous respect for nature and driven by the desire to pass on a healthy vineyard to their children, their vineyards were among the first to be dualy certified in organic and biodynamic farming and today represent the largest biodynamically cultivated area in the region.

Claire and Gonzague are among those people who are driven by their passion, faithful to their deepest values, like true agricultural explorers always searching new practices, adapted to their lands, allowing them to reveal their terroir and to produce living wines; in the end, to produce Great Wines that matter.

Château Ferrière, a unique heritage in Margaux

The Merlaut family bought Château Ferrière with the ambition of restoring its former glory, which had led it to its status as 3rd Grand Cru Classé in 1855. In 1992, after the death of her mother Bernadette, Claire took over the management of the estate. Endowed with determination and tenacity, Claire is a fighter. To make your way in the world of wine requires a strong personality ... Following in her mother's footsteps, Claire imposes her feminie style as a vinegrower in the Bordeaux region. She is armed for the challenge and has devoted herself to restoring Château Ferrière's prestige.

Its 24-hectare vineyard is located 95% on the Margaux plateau, in the heart of the appellation. It is a unique heritage of massal diversity as a third of the vines that makes up the vineyard dates from the 1950s. The newly planted vines were first multiplied on site, allowing to preserve the biodiversity of the ancestral grape varieties. Certified in Organic Agriculture in 2015, Château Ferrière is the first Grand Cru Classé of Margaux to be dualy certified in Biodynamics in 2018 by Demeter & Biodyvin.

2021, a vintage with a lot of character

A vintage we like to produce: with freshness, tension, a beautiful quality of tannins and a lot of finesse. In 2021, we were able to offer an unprecedented percentage of Cabernet-Sauvignon that will allow the wine to defy time.
2021 is a vintage to taste, savour and enjoy as much as it took energy from the teams. We are so proud of the result! !

The 2021 Ferrière is a very shy, reticent wine. It has good depth, but all its energy is presently directed inward. Blue fruit, gravel, spice, menthol, licorice and mocha open with a bit of coaxing, but the 2021 needs time. Cabernet Sauvignon is elevated in this year's blend, and it shows in the wine's flavor profile and overall feel. Yields were just 24 hectoliters-per-hectare.

Offering up notes of cherries, dark berries, charcoal and petroleum jelly, the 2021 Ferrière is medium to full-bodied, rich and fleshy, with an impressively round, generous profile for the vintage. Cabernet Sauvignon represents an unusually high proportion (81%) of the blend.

Vibrant and creamy with bright plum, lavender and wet-soil notes. Medium body. Layers of juicy, fleshy tannins spread across the palate. Lots of brightness. 81% cabernet sauvignon, 13% merlot, 5% petit verdot and 1% cabernet franc. From biodynamically grown grapes with Demeter certification.

Once again, Ferrière 2021 shows us its outstanding floral and fruity character, as consistently as if any weather conditions fail to cast an influence on it. With 81% of Cabernet Sauvignon in the blend, it still manages to deliver an incredibly fresh, juicy, mushy, and silky mouthfeel. The tannins on the finish are full of tension and very chewy. From what I know about Ferrière, it will definitely be softer after 5 years' aging. The 2021 Ferrière has less Merlot, the 13% coming from a parcel planted in the 1950s from which they make a massal selection. Aged in 40% new oak, 40% one-year-old barrels and 20% amphorae, it has a well-defined, elegant bouquet of pure black fruit laced with pencil lead and cedar. The palate is medium-bodied with grainy tannins, fine depth and body. A Margaux doing a good impression of a Pauillac in some way, thanks to the 81% Cabernet Sauvignon. Fine persistence on the finish. Excellent.

The 2021 Ferrière is marked by a historically high percentage of Cabernet Sauvignon in the blend. That yields a Ferrière with notable strictness and energy. Red/purplish fruit, lavender, rose petal, mint and sweet spice all take shape in the glass. Pretty floral top notes reappear on the finish, adding lift. I especially admire the vibrancy here.

Incorporating fully 81% Cabernet Sauvignon, the 2021 Ferrière offers up notes of blackberries, licorice and loamy soil, followed by a medium to full-bodied, rich and rather layered, muscular palate built around powdery tannins and lively acids. Still primary and unevolved, this is a promising effort that should continue to improve with élevage. (90 - 92)+

Dark blackcurrant, plum and soft perfume aspects on the nose. So juicy on the palate, really high acidity but it's sweet and softly high toned. The acidity is giving some sharpness to the fruit at this point but there is enough concentration and density to balance it while still giving the structure and overall freshness alongside nuances of dark chocolate, perfume and liquorice. Usually Ferrière has 25% Merlot, this year just 13%, so the 81% Cabernet Sauvignon is doing most of the talking, giving a lifted menthol feel, firm tannins and an effortlessly long finish. This has energy and verve, it's fruit forward and upfront. I love the signature here. 1% Cabernet Franc completes the blend. 62% grand vin, in 2020 it was 68%. 12.5% press wine. 18 months ageing, 40% new oak, 40% one year and 20% in amphora. A yield of 26hL/ha, better than 2020's 20hL/ha.
