Ferrière (BIO-ORGANIC) - Margaux 2022

Gonzague & Claire Lurton Estates, a story of passion

Claire Villars Lurton and Gonzague Lurton are among those people who are driven by their passion. They both come from great Bordeaux winegrowing families: the Merlaut family and the Lurton family. These two forces of nature proudly took over their family estates in the early 90's: Château Durfort Vivens, 2nd Cru Classé in 1855 in Margaux, Château Ferrière, 3rd Cru Classé in 1855 in Margaux, Château Haut-Bages Libéral, 5th Cru Classé in 1855 in Pauillac and Château La Gurgue in Margaux.

In the Bordeaux world of Grands Crus Classés, Claire and Gonzague are pioneers in organic farming, biodynamics and now in agroecology and agroforestry.
Claire and Gonzague, faithful to their deepest values, always search new practices that are adopted to their soils and allow them to reveal the terroir and to produce living wines; in the end, to produce fines wines that matter.

Château Ferrière, a unique heritage in Margaux

The Merlaut family bought Château Ferrière with the ambition of restoring its former glory, which had led it to its status as 3rd Grand Cru Classé in 1855. In 1992, after the death of her mother Bernadette, Claire took over the management of the estate and has devoted herself to restoring Château Ferrière's prestige.

Its 24-hectare vineyard is located 95% on the Margaux plateau, in the heart of the appellation. It is a unique heritage of massal diversity as a third of the vines that makes up the vineyard dates from the 1950s. Certified in Organic Agriculture in 2015, Château Ferrière is the first Grand Cru Classé of Margaux to be dualy certified in Biodynamics in 2018 by Demeter & Biodyvin.

The 2022 vintage

Château Ferriere 2022 is a vintage of character and surprising contrasts. Despite the extreme weather conditions, the wine has a magnificent freshness.

If blind-tasting reveals aromas of tea tree mushrooms, graphite, and Da Bai Tu milk candy, it’s highly likely to be Château Ferrière. I’ve always admired Château Ferrière’s approach to refining tannins in recent years: the intense structure has gradually been imbued with a milky smoothness. No longer am I experiencing just power and structure, but rather a tamed passion and softened tension, which are even more prominent in the 2022 vintage. With 13.7% abv and a pH value of 3.64, Château Ferrière still presents an ideal acidity in a hot, dry year, making it an outstanding Margaux wine.

The 2022 Ferrière offers up aromas of cassis, blackberries and cherries framed by hints of cigar box and leather. Medium to full-bodied, rich and textural, it's layered and creamy, with powdery tannins and ripe acids, concluding with a plummy, somewhat lactic finish.

This has a powerful edge, giving a distinctive character of the 2022 vintage. Delivers expansion through the mid palate, saline-streaked on the finish, an impressive vintage of Ferrière. 35% new oak for 18 months.

2027-2038 94/100

The 2022 Ferrière, from a vineyard that contains plenty of old vines according to proprietor Claire Villars-Lurton, was cropped at 24 hl/ha. This has a complex, nuanced bouquet that opens beautifully in the glass, with red plum, blackberry fruit and light flinty scents coming through with time. The palate is very well balanced and briny with a fine bead of acidity, a strong marine influence and gentle grip on the black olive-tinged finish. This is excellent.

The 2022 Ferrière is packed with inky dark fruit, lavender, chocolate, new leather, licorice and incense. This muscular, brooding Margaux is seriously intense in every dimension. I would give it at least a few years in bottle, as the tannins are rather imposing at this stage. Ferrière is one of the most virile and imposing wines in Margaux. The 2022 spent 18 months in new oak, once-used barrels, concrete ovals and amphora.

Gorgeous fragrance of roses and milk chocolate, expressive, alive and inviting. Round and supple, generous flavours of blackcurrant, black cherry and strawberry. Compete and well textured, tannins are super fine and so well integrated, just giving a touch of grip and support to the fruit and high acidity. Well controlled, gentle, confident but not showy at all with a lovely energy and push from start to finish. Lovely texture and juiciness, pretty and so still with structure. Doesn’t have so much concentration and overt power but really delivers a gorgeous, sculpted, precise, refined glass of wine with so much energy and dynamism. Excellent, stony mineral finish too and such a long length. You could drink this today. 1% Cabernet Franc completes the blend. 75-80% grand vin production. 3.64pH. A yield of 24hl/ha. Ageing: 18 months, 35% in new oak barrels, 35% in barrels of one wine.

The 2022 Ferrière was cropped at 24hL/ha between 12 and 23 September with 13.7% alcohol. Aged in 35% new oak, 35% one-year-old, 20% concrete and 10% amphorae, this has an expressive bouquet with black cherries, cassis and crushed violet scents that explode from the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with great depth, smoothness and gentle grip. This is fairly plush, keeping with the style of the vintage, and has a persistent finish. This represents one of the best wines from Ferrière that I have tasted in a bloomin' long time.

Another delicious, up-front, textured Margaux in the vintage, the 2022 Château Ferrière boasts a deep purple hue as well as red, blue, and black fruits, some leather, smoked meat, and leafy herb nuances, medium to full body, and just a charming, round, mouth-filling style that's going to drink well right out of the gate.

The 2022 Ferrière is deep, inky and quite potent, but at the same time there is some aggressiveness, especially in the tannins. Some of that starts to dissipate with aeration, but the 2022 remains a bit forbidding in feel. I am cautiously optimistic, mostly based on how strong recent vintages have been, but the 2022 is not an easy wine to taste at this stage. This sample is 70% amphora and 30% new oak prepared for the en primeur tastings, but the finished wine is expected to be composed of lots aged in new oak (40%), once-used oak (40%) and amphora/concrete (20%). A blend of 67% Cabernet Sauvignon, 27% Merlot and the balance Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot, the 2022 Ferrière offers up aromas of dark berries, plums and sweet soil tones, followed by a medium to full-bodied, rich and layered palate that's suave, elegantly muscular and lively. From biodynamically farmed clay-rich gravels, this 18-hectare estate (formerly leased to Château Lascombes) possesses an unusually high proportion of old vines, with fully one-third of their vineyards over 70 years of age.

A wine that shows wonderful fruit with a ripeness and freshness at the same time. Medium to full body. Velvety and open. Blackcurrant, orange peel, and lovely fruit. Energy. From biodynamically grown grapes with Demeter certification.
