Pavillon rouge - Margaux 2021

Château Margaux, a fascinating 1st Grand Cru Classé

Château Margaux’s renown stem equally from the intrinsic genius of the location as from the contributions made by the people who have served it for five centuries. Corinne Mentzelopoulos is one of those personalities that will leave a indelible mark on the great history of Château Margaux. She has been presiding over the destiny of the estate since her father tragically passed away in 1980. She has honored this heritage, vintage after vintage, all the while questioning herself with the aim of projecting Château Margaux into the future.

Pavillon Rouge du Château Margaux, the story of a great second wine

Pavillon Rouge du Château Margaux took its name in 1908. After an eclipse between the thirties and the mid-seventies, its production restarted on the arrival of André Mentzelopoulos in 1977 and at first greatly increased in order to improve the quality of the first wine. From the mid-90s, the creation of a third wine in its turn, allowed for a more rigorous selection for Pavillon Rouge.

The quality of Pavillon Rouge has become very close to that of the first wine because all the plots involved contributed to the blending of Château Margaux not so long ago. It may not have the same “magic” as its elder brother, but it definitely shares its flavours, its balance and the same subtle senses of power and softness.

The 2021 vintage, a fine and silky wine

For many years, important efforts have been made to restructure the vineyard and to implement a particularly demanding selection.
The pleasant surprise of the blends was the tasting of a very young plot of Cabernet Franc on clay, formerly planted in Cabernet-Sauvignon.
The wine presents very floral aromas typical of relatively fresh vintages. Then in the mouth, its tannic structure is silky and of a remarkable finesse.

The 2021 Pavillon Rouge is bright and beautifully focused. A slender, vibrant Pavillon Rouge, the 2021 impresses with energy more than volume. Bright acids lift a core of red plum fruit, blood orange, cinnamon and rose petal. Saline notes extend the finish. Today, the 2021 is a bit clenched, but that should not be an issue in a few years' time.

The 2021 Pavillon Rouge offers up aromas of raspberries, sweet cherries and white flowers, followed by a medium to full-bodied, lively palate that's quite taut and youthfully structured out of the gates, with good depth at the core and powdery tannins. It will reward a bit of bottle age.

The shortest description for 2021 Pavillon Rouge is ‘fine, fine wine’. Philippe Bascaules doesn’t strike me as a chap prone to chuckling, but he liked – fine, fine wine, and it raised a smile. This level of refinement in a super-premium wine is to be celebrated from the rooftops because so often, ‘fine red wines’ are massive, hulking monsters that are ungainly and occasionally un-swallowable. I have never liked this style of wine, and in 2021 you couldn’t make one if you tried. Instead, we have super-bright, clean, pure fruit with none of the sweetness of a hot or late-picked vintage. We also have low alcohols, crunchy acidity and extraordinary freshness everywhere you look. The sacrifices made at Margaux to end up with the two red wines in this Report are astonishing, and this is why they taste more like ‘classic Margaux’ than any I have seen in a long while. Don’t get me wrong – I love Pavillon Rouge like the next person, and I enjoy the fuller-framed wines, too, but when it tastes as resonant and accurate as it does in this vintage, I have to pick my jaw up off the floor. 18

The second wine of the estate, the 2021 Pavillon Rouge is mostly Cabernet Sauvignon yet includes 18% Merlot, 5% Petit Verdot, and 4% Cabernet Franc. With a pH of 3.68 and an IPT of 74, it's a serious, age-worthy second wine offering medium-bodied aromas and flavors of cassis, graphite, and smoked tobacco. It's beautifully balanced, with good mid-palate depth, ripe tannins, and outstanding length. It's in the running for the top second wine in the vintage.

Deep colour. Fresh dark plum blackberry mulberry aromas with hint vanilla, herb garden notes. Richly concentrated and chocolate textured with dark plum black cherry fruits, some bitter sweet notes. Finished firm with chinotto flavours. Very good.

The 2021 Pavillon Rouge continues the trend of more Petit Verdot and Cabernet Franc in the final blend as the vines planted 20 years ago reach maturity. Aged in 50% and 60% new oak, it has a very well-defined bouquet with perfumed black fruit, crushed violet and a touch of blood orange. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins, rounded and fleshy to the point that you could almost run down the famous driveway and drink a bottle. Quite persistent on the finish. Very fine.

The 2021 Pavillon Rouge is soft, sensual and open-knit, all qualities that make it an absolute delight to taste today. A burst of red/purplish fruit, rose petal, leather and sweet spice gives the 2021 its upfront appeal. There's lovely energy and brightness underpinning it all. Soaring aromatic top notes add allure, making it impossible to resist a second taste.

Leuchtendes Rubin.

Aromas of plums, raspberries and sweet spices introduce the 2021 Pavillon Rouge, a medium to full-bodied, velvety and vibrant wine that's impressively rich and mouthfilling, revealing a deep core of fruit framed by powdery tannins and lively acids, concluding with a long, saline finish. The blend is 73% Cabernet Sauvignon, 18% Merlot, 5% Petit Verdot and 4% Cabernet Franc, and Philippe Bascaules observes that parcels planted 20 years ago and destined for the grand vin when they're a bit older are increasingly making the cut for Pavillon Rouge.

Soft rose-touched blackcurrants, really quite delicate and pretty yet also expressive, the aromas clearly discernible in the glass with a vivid pink-purple rim. So smooth and quite sensuous, you get the crushed velvet texture and thrashing acidity straight away, giving a round mouth, with these spikes of piquancy from the Petit Verdot. Really quite perfumed too. Vibrant with an excellent aromatic display and so much freshness. It’s on the tightrope - balancing the austerity and the plushness, the richness and the delicacy, the acidity and the structure. Tastes young and sparky, like a racing car ready to go, all energetic and buzzed. A great second wine. 4% Cabernet Franc completes the blend.
