Domaine Serrig, Kabinett - Mosel 2021

Markus Molitor: Maestro of German Riesling Excellence!

In the illustrious world of German Riesling, Markus Molitor stands as a beacon of distinction. Renowned globally, he has transformed the family estate into a sprawling 120-hectare empire nestled in the heart of the esteemed Moselle vineyards. Seizing control of the estate at a youthful 20 years old, Markus continues the storied legacy passed down through eight generations in his family, with a vision to revive the golden era of the most exceptional Moselle Rieslings. His mastery unfolds in the cultivation of old vines on steep slopes, dominating over 90% of his vineyard plots.

In 2016, Markus embarked on an exciting journey in the Saar with the acquisition of Domäne Serrig, a vineyard perhaps less acknowledged than its illustrious Moselle counterpart but equally distinguished. This historical gem, established in 1904 by the German Emperor Wilhelm, is home to the Vogelsang vineyard, sprawling across 25 hectares on steep slopes, some gradients even boasting an impressive 105%.

Kabinett: A Subtly Sweet and Fruity Riesling: Derived from the first picking, Kabinett undergoes a meticulous 10-month aging process on lees in traditional oak casks, followed by two years of bottle maturation. Kabinett emerges as an 'off-dry' masterpiece, presenting a subtly nuanced sweetness impeccably balanced by its vibrant acidity."

Tasting notes

Embark on a sensory journey with lucid white fruit aromas entwined with subtle slate undertones. Delicate and precise, almost weightlessly dancing on the palate. Vibrant in the mineral finish, animating and nimble with a piquant aftertaste.

Molitor's Serrig 2021 Vogelsang Kabinett is still a little reductive but already delicate and charming in its ripe and lush yet savory, terroir-driven fruit aromas. The cool and rainy 2021 vintage was perfect for the Kabinett style, and this Serriger Vogelsang is a beautiful example. It is rich and generous on the nose yet also refined and savory, with all the Saar spiciness and Serrig finesse you may dream of. Round, generous yet savory, saline and refined, this is a highly stimulating, savory and persistently saline Kabinett of great complexity, length and tension. There are not many Kabinetts of this class in Germany or even the Saar. Egon Müller's and Molitor's own Scharzhofberger are references and maybe also the Euchariusberg Kabniett "Giesela" from Hofghut Falkenstrein and maybe Van Volxem's Gaisberg one day, but that's it. The wine is a little sweet now but also savory and saline, and its predominantly mineral expression has already begun to bite the sugar away. That's definitely a wine to buy—and not only because it costs half of the Grosse Lage! In fact, I initially considered the Kabinett to be the real grand cru and the finest expression of the challenging vintage. It's irresistible and highly stimulating even at this young stage. But it's a Kabinett and not a grand cru. 9.5% stated alcohol. Natural cork. Tasted in September 2024.

Domäne Serrig Vogelsang Kabinett (Markus Molitor) 2021 (100% Riesling; from a legendary estate established by Kaiser Wilhelm II in 1904 on the incredibly steep slate slopes of the Saar river valley; 9.5% alcohol). This is a whole degree of alcohol lower than the first release, the 2020. Spell-binding in its complexity, with a dusty earthiness to its minerality immediately evident alongside the almost tactile white pear skin and gooseberry aromatics. Brilliantly incisive on the attack, with rapier-like precision and finesse, this is wonderfully linear, almost needle-like in fact by the time we get to finish on a distant horizon. Concentrated citrus (think lemon-juice reduction perhaps for the tarte au citron), apricot stone and almost a hint of wild strawberry. Incredible, once again. 97.

Finely boned and graceful with soaring architecture, this is a brilliant Riesling from Markus Molitor, full of flint, angular, crisp, saline, concentrated green apple and white mango, one of the wines of the September Releases.
