Domaine Serrig, Grosse Lage - Mosel 2021

Markus Molitor: Maestro of the German Riesling !

In the illustrious world of German Riesling, Markus Molitor stands as a beacon of distinction. Renowned globally, he has transformed the family estate into a sprawling 120-hectare empire nestled in the heart of the esteemed Moselle vineyards. Seizing control of the estate at a youthful 20 years old, Markus continues the storied legacy passed down through eight generations in his family, with a vision to revive the golden era of the most exceptional Moselle Rieslings. His mastery unfolds in the cultivation of old vines on steep slopes, dominating over 90% of his vineyard plots.

In 2016, Markus embarked on an exciting journey in the Saar with the acquisition of Domäne Serrig, a vineyard perhaps less acknowledged than its illustrious Moselle counterpart but equally distinguished. This historical gem, established in 1904 by the German Emperor Wilhelm, is home to the Vogelsang vineyard, sprawling across 25 hectares on steep slopes, some gradients even boasting an impressive 105%.

Grosse Lage: An Exceptional Grand Cru:
Crafted exclusively from Grands Crus vines, Grosse Lage is a sublime dry white wine that encapsulates the essence of the Saar vineyard. Hand-harvested in mid-October, the grapes undergo a meticulous 10-month lees aging in 3000-liter Stokinger oak barrels, followed by an additional two years of bottle maturation. A truly outstanding expression.

Tasting notes

Engage in the vibrant dance between expressive flint and delicate white fruit nuances. The palate reveals a finely structured body, both taut and commanding. Its unique minerality, reminiscent of sea salt, shines through. Concluding with a pristine finish, the wine lingers, asserting its near-endless persistence.

Markus Molitor's intensely yellow colored Domäne Serrig 2021 Vogelsang Grosse Lage opens with a deep, intense and rich yet refined bouquet of ripe Saar Riesling intermingled with sur-lie aromas and Molitor's script. This could be a Burgundy as well in terms of fruit intensity and the yeasty undercurrent. Round and elegant on the palate, this is an off-dry Riesling with a savory palate and the remarkable 2021 acidity that is well wrapped here by texture and a serving of sweetness that most consumers might receive as roundness, the more so since its assisted by a sense of large oak. The acidity is nevertheless very fine and even playful, and the wine indicates its depth and mineral tension. It is well balanced yet mouthfilling and salivating, but it's still far too young to be consumed for what it is. A pleasant and promising wine at this early stage, yet this is even more of a sleeping giant that deserves not just our money but even more so our patience. It is very long and intense and with endless fruit aromas and stimulating salts. Keep it for at least 5 or 6 years. 12% stated alcohol. Natural cork. Tasted in September 2024.

Domäne Serrig Vogelsang Grosse Lage (Markus Molitor) 2021 (100% Riesling; from a grand cru vineyard in the Saar; from a legendary estate built by Kaiser Wilhelm II in 1904 on the incredibly steep slate slopes of the Saar river valley; 10 g/l of residual sugar, acidity of 8 g/l; 12% alcohol). Another simply staggering wine from Markus Molitor. There’s so much precision, so much complexity, so much detail and such singularity. Spectacular and extremely memorable. An intense flinty, stony minerality that has one imaging a barren rocky steeply contoured scree slope. Vertiginous acidity, with glorious citron pressé and pamplemouse pressé notes, a little blood orange and orange blossom too. A wine with immense aging potential, but that is already mind-expanding, not least in the incredibly vertical range the fruit seems to travel in the mouth. Brilliantly chiselled, incredibly tense and yet gloriously silky in its texture. A monument to Riesling. 99.

Matchstick and campfire smoke on the opening, gorgeous stretched out architecture, expands through the palate while never loosening the grip. Slate, citrus, juicy elderflower. Markus Molitor delivering a delcious Riesling here, one to track down and share.
