Doisy-Daene - Barsac 2022

Denis Dubourdieu Domaines

George, the aesthete and goldsmith of wine making, Pierre the visionary, Denis the great winegrower and reference winemaker for the whites and finally Fabrice and Jean Jacques, the worthy heirs, it is an understatement to say that the Dubourdieu family has marked the wine industry through the ages.

Today, the family owns several renowned properties, including Château Reynon, Clos Floridène, Château du Haura and Château Doisy-Daëne. Fabrice and Jean-Jacques, the new generation, honor their father's extraordinary career and keep highlighting the exceptional know-how of this family.

Doisy-Daëne, the first classified growth of the family

Château Doisy-Daëne, Second Cru Classé in 1855, located in Barsac in the Sauternes appellation, is characterized by its unique terroir. The composition of the soil of the Barsac plateau is from a geological standpoint and for the Bordeaux region unusual A thin layer of clayey sands, known as "Barsac red sands", tops the chalky subsoil. This lightly cracked calcareous rock layer limits the rooting depth of the vine to about twenty inches. The water that got stored within the slightly porous rock throughout the summer, is progressively dispensed to the vine during the winter, preventing thus a water overload. This soil is particularly well-suited to the making of elegant and distinguished white wines.

Tasting notes

Doisy Daëne wine has a style of its own that privileges a bursting fruit concentrated by the "noble rot", strength, balance and subtlety of the flavors. The Doisy-Daëne style is all at once the expression of a great calcareous soil and a truly aesthetic family tradition, the one of distinguished white wines, of crystal-like purity, combining power and freshness, in an infinite youth.

The clear acidity, combined with the classic red sandstone-limestone soils of Barsac, gives Château Doisy Daëne 2022 an exceptional clarity, making it one of the most botrytis-driven Sauternes from the 2022 vintage. The long-awaited ginger and saffron aromas leap from the glass with each swirl, accompanied by the complex scents of kumquat, cinnamon, apricot, and floral honey. In a hot vintage like 2022, Château Doisy Daëne achieves ideal acidity through its high concentration, delivering a balance and complexity that match the level of a top-tier botrytis wine in my mind.

2030-2057 98/100

The 2022 Doisy-Daëne has a powerful bouquet with touches of yellow fruit, pressed white flowers, saffron and jasmine emerging with time. This has fine delineation. The palate is supremely well balanced with caressing viscous botrytised fruit effortlessly matched by the acidity. Poised and very tender on the long finish, this is a wonderful Barsac.

Excellent quality, powerful and yet restrained, luscious and opulent yet riven through with slate and pumice texture, great quality, this has the grated ginger that you really need in 2022 for the sweet wine to lift off; you get it's here in spades. Love it.

The 2022 Doisy-Daëne is supremely beautiful. Apricot jam, white flowers and mint open first, all framed by a kiss of new French oak. Rich and creamy in the glass, yet not at all heavy, Doisy-Daëne is sublime. Lifted floral and tropical overtones extend the mid-palate and finish while also lending quite a bit of freshness. Superb.

Lively and energetic, a lifted expression with bitter orange peel countering the pineapple and mango fruit. Lovely complexity and construction, an unctuous almost sherbet mid palate, which then becomes more mineral and focussed. Feels well worked with lots of life and definition as well as richness. Lots to like here. 150g/l residual sugar. 3.75g total acidity.

The limpid acidity and the classic red sand-limestone soil of Barsac combine to give Château Doisy Daëne 2022 a rare sense of clarity, making it one of the most outstanding botrytis wines of the vintage. The long-awaited aromas of ginger and saffron dance in the glass, accompanied by a complex bouquet of kumquat, cinnamon, apricot jam, and floral honey. In a vintage with generally moderate acidity, this wine achieves an ideal balance and complexity with its high concentration, coming very close to the quality of the 2019 vintage.

The 2022 Doisy-Daëne has an intense bouquet that blossoms in the glass: dried honey, quince and honeysuckle, with light saffron scents emerging with time. The palate is brimming with tension, razor-sharp acidity, quince and tangerine, leading to a slightly peachy, vivacious finish. What a wonderful "DD" from Jean-Jacques Dubourdieu.

Pale medium colour. Classical apricot nectarine lemon curd aromas with vanilla, marzipan, fine chalky al dente textures, lovely mid palate volume/ richness and well integrated acidity.(Semillon, Sauvignon Blanc, Muscadelle 30% new oak)

Pale gold in colour, with dried apricot, frangipane, honeysuckle and baked mirabelle plum, offset by a welcome bitter edge of rosemary that gives contrast. Rich in texture, this is luscious and intense. Dubourdieu family are the owners at this legendary Barsac estate, and the fact that even here the balance is challenging is a clear sign to me that there is an issue with freshness in the sweet wines this year. Ageing starts with 10 months in oak barrels, this is followed by 9 months in stainless steel tank before bottling. Tasted twice at different temperatures, and the key takeaway is that they need to be served cold to maximise the perception of acidity. I was a huge fan of this wine last year, and I would urge you to look out for the 2021 vintage to really capture the spirit of this excellent property.
