Coutet - Barsac 2022

Château Coutet, a flagship of the Barsac appellation

Château Coutet is a historic vineyard located in the Barsac appellation. Its medieval architecture dates back to the 13th century, but its winemaking reputation dates to the 17th century.

In 1855, Château Coutet was classified as Premier Grand Cru Classé of Sauternes and Barsac, a recognition of the exceptional quality of its wines. Its unique terroir stands out for its cool soils. The vines then express this coolness by producing this rich and lively wine.

In 1977, the Baly family purchased the estate and modernized its winemaking techniques. In 1994, the family signed a partnership agreement with Baron Philippe de Rothschild to benefit from their expertise in winemaking and marketing. Today, Aline Baly, the granddaughter of Marcel Baly, is the third generation to participation in the family adventure.

Tasting notes

The nose reveals jammy quince and fig aromas together with toasted and vanilla notes, as well as fresher notes of ginger, preserved lemon and lemon curd. On the palate, the very powerful and remarkably complex attack makes an immediate impression, with freshness offsetting the power and heft of this beautifully balanced wine.

The terroir advantage of Barsac shines through in the hot 2022 vintage, with such a delicate mouthfeel that is rarely seen throughout the Sauternes region. The pure and abundant fruit aromas interweave into a rich and full-bodied melody, with notes of peach and orange marmalade as the leading roles. When swirling the glass, the hints of acacia honey and lily flower become apparent, as if they were accompanying melodies surrounding the main theme. Despite not having an outstanding acidity, there is no sense of heaviness. With age, it may evolve into a rich and sweet flavor similar to that of the 2003 vintage.

The 2022 Château Coutet is more deep gold-hued and has a ripe, powerful style in its brioche, toasted bread, honeyed orange, and marmalade-like aromas and flavors. It's a rich, unctuous, full-bodied effort that has serious density and depth.

2029-2072 99/100

The 2022 Coutet has a clean and precise bouquet with scents of white peach, apricot blossom, quince and saffron. It unfolds wonderfully in the glass but maintains a sense of control. The palate is very well balanced, with ample weight counterbalanced by a keen thread of acidity. There is a naturalness to this Coutet that I really appreciate. This is very fine.

Low yields but well expressed juiciness here, along with luscious texture of apricot, citrus, pineapple, sage, mint leaf, liqourice, really impressive complexity and depth of flavour, kick of slate minerality on finish. An upscore from En Primeur - more proof that Barsac is the place to look in this vintage. Harvest September 26 to October 28

Lots of dried-apricot and peach aromas with hints of dried white mushrooms and flowers. Medium- to full-bodied, this has lots of sweetness but a spicy flint and citrus character with dried pineapple and white peaches. Extremely long and flavorful. Such a balance and classiness to this. Drink or hold.

The 2022 Coutet delivers nuances of pineapple, tangerine oil, orange confit and spice. Exotic and unctuous, it's also light on its feet for such an obviously rich wine. There's great balance here.

One of the wines of the vintage, the 2022 Coutet opens with notes of apricots, spices and exotic fruits, setting the stage for a medium to full-bodied, round and supple palate enhanced by brightness and tension that culminates in a spicy, minty finish. Its balanced structure and lively acidity contribute to an ethereal ending, making it a very elegant yet chiseled Barsac. This blend of 94% Sémillon, 5% Sauvignon Blanc and 1% Muscadelle is matured for 18 months in barrels.

Bight and fun, a lovely easy, clean and sleek texture, quite straight with focus and a sense of cool freshness on the palate with some soft bitter edges that are so appealing. Has a great frame, slowly expands, not so overtly sweet or zingy, but this is refined and well delivered, still with concentration in the depth and overall long length. 158g/l residual sugar. 3.88pH.

Pale medium colour. Fresh nougat, apricot, nectarine, honey aromas with orange peel notes. Richly concentrated and supple with lovely viscosity, lacy textures, some bittersweet notes and fresh quartz-like acidity. Very well balanced with lovely complexity and mineral length. 94% Semillon 5% Sauvignon Blanc 1% Muscadelle

Luscious and sweet, sticky dates and crème caramel flavours, balanced by orange zest and lime. There is interest and contrast here, but even at this exceptional Barsac estate, owned by the Baly family, it is hard not to crave a little more lift.

Flowers, pineapples, mango, apricot and candied lemon notes get the wine going. The palate, with its layers of sweet, ripe and overripe, honeyed yellow, and orange fruits is fresh, long, intense, balanced, and most importantly, delicious! And isn't that the purpose of a wine? Drink from 2025-2055.

Tempting dried fruit here with spice and floral character. Full and creamy with attractive acidity and a textural finish.
