Desmirail - Margaux 2022

The estate

In 1741 Jean-Baptiste Desmirail gave his name to this property in Margaux, when he received it from his wife. The château belonged to the Desmirail family until just before the 1855 classification, when it was purchased by Monsieur Sipière, the steward of Château Margaux. It was under his ownership that Desmirail obtained the rank of 3rd Grand Cru Classé. In 1980, Lucien Lurton purchased the estate and passed it on to Denis Lurton, his son, in 1992. He continues the work of his father and celebrates, with the 2022 vintage, his 30th vintage at the helm of the estate. On this occasion, the bottle is adorned with a special label designed by the artist Anaïs Vindel.

The 2022 vintage - "the one special vintage of a carreer"

"2022 is probably the exceptional vintage of a career, like the 61, 45, or 29 were for some; it will undoubtedly be mine. Desmirail reaffirms with this superb 2022 vintage the style that I chose to promote thirty years ago: a wine focused on elegance, suppleness, and roundness. In short, a Margaux in the Margaux style. It is also with the 2022 vintage that I celebrate my 30th anniversary at Desmirail. For this occasion a special label ('collector') has been designed,  featuring the artwork of a young Bordeaux artist, Anaïs Vindel." Denis Lurton

Having tasted Château Desmirail for many years, I have never encountered such an aromatic expression. The early harvest in 2022 (from September 8 to September 23) was undoubtedly a wise decision. Otherwise, we might have missed this sweet and fragrant Margaux gem. One of the unique features of this wine is that with just a swirl of the glass, the aromas of camellia and rose effortlessly bloom, shimmering around the notes of red cherry and sour pomegranate. Despite the dry heat of the 2022 vintage, this wine has an alcohol content of just 13%, and its clear acidity feels like a breath of fresh spring air, making it easy to enjoy even in its youth.

Medium intensity colour, intense and concentrated, grilled sandalwood and cedar, coffee beans and liquorice, this is a little oak dominant, has swagger and confidence with dark cassis and blackberry fruits, hard to find the light. Denis Lurton owner.

The 2022 Desmirail confirms my expectations for it during the en primeur tasting. Revealing a complex, elegant bouquet of flowers, dark wild berries, mulberries and spices mingled with delicate notes of sweet berries, it's medium to full-bodied, layered and enrobing with velvety, delicate tannins and a long, ethereal and violet-inflected finish. This blend of 50% Merlot, 40% Cabernet Sauvignon, 5% Petit Verdot and 5% Cabernet Franc is a real success and retains enormous appeal.

Spicy oak, ripe black cherries, and floral nuances emerge from the 2022 Château Desmirail, a medium-bodied, elegant, seamless Margaux offering polished tannins, just about flawless balance, and a great finish. It's beautifully done and well worth seeking out. If it picks up weight with 2-4 years in the cellar, the score will seem low. The 2022 is 50% Merlot, 40% Cabernet Sauvignon, and the balance Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot.

2027-2042 92/100

Smoke, berries, ripe plums, currants, roasted spices and a touch of citrus on the nose. Fluid, poised and nimble on the palate, showing well-judged extraction and fine-grained tannins. Chalky, juicy and pretty long. A bit more approachable than many, but give it one more year. Drink from 2026.

The 2022 Desmirail is a heady, potent Margaux. Copious layers of inky dark fruit and sweet oak tones are front and center. Desmirail is not at all subtle, and yet it is very well balanced in its own way. Time in the glass brings out hints of sage, chocolate, new leather and incense.

Richly scented and evocative on the nose, crystalline and pure, with fragrant and floral blue fruits and cool stoney touches. Feels well worked, tannins are beautifully integrated, plump, plush, velvety giving a serious and well-built frame but with enough freshness and acidity to keep things moving and lifted. I like this a lot, especially the florality and the juicy core. Elegant and refined with a lovely minty finish. Clearly concentrated and powerful with richness and body but with focus and such a seductive flavour and texture. 5% Cabernet Franc completes the blend. Harvest 8-23 September.

Throughout my years of tasting, I've never come across such an outstanding Château Desmirail. The wise choice in 2022 was to harvest early, from September 8th to September 23rd; otherwise, we might have missed this deliciously sweet and gently fragrant Margaux. Swirling the glass reveals camellia and rose aromas, dancing around red cherry and tart pomegranate notes. It is well-balanced on the mid-palate, with very fine tannins. In hot and dry vintage like 2022, the alcohol level is just 13%, and the acidity is even more crisp and clean. Overall, this wine feels like a taste of spring and is enjoyable even when young, without any sense of tiredness.

Medium deep crimson. Generous dark cherry, dark plum cedar aromas and flavours, sinuous fine grained tannins and some praline/ cedar notes. Finishes sinewy firm. Bittersweetness gives vinosity and length. (Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Petit Verdot 50% new oak)

The 2022 Desmirail is deep garnet-purple in color. Classic notes of cassis, baked plums, and cedar chest waft from the glass with nuances of fallen leaves and tilled soil. The medium-bodied palate is straight-laced, with a firm structure of grainy tannins and lively acidity supporting the muscular black fruits, finishing savory.

A medium-bodied, elegant, graceful Margaux that does well in the vintage, the 2022 Château Desmirail offers an exotic style in its red and blue fruits as well as complex notes of sandalwood, spice, and flowery incense. Medium-bodied on the palate, supple, and elegant, with nicely integrated tannins and acidity, it should shine with just short-term cellaring.

The 2022 Desmirail is quite aromatic and savory in this vintage. Dried herbs, flowers, mint, pipe tobacco and crushed red berry fruit all grace this mid-weight, perfumed Margaux. Drinking window : 2025-2037

The 2022 Desmirail offers up a lovely bouquet mingling tobacco, cassis, wild berries, spices and a touch of well-integrated toasted oak, followed by a medium to full-bodied, seamless and supple palate that's fleshy and sapid, concluding with a refined finish.
