Baron de Brane - Margaux 2022

NEW LABEL

Brane Cantenac, an emblem of excellence

Founded in the 18th century under the name of Gorce, this property located on the best gravelly hillside of Cantenac was already considered as one of the best Second Growths of the Médoc before the 1855 classification.

Baron de Brane, the name of the second wine, pays hommage to the famous Baron Jacques-Maxime de Brane, the ’Napoléon des Vignes’, owner of the property in the 19th Century.

Since his arrival, in 1992, Henri has endeavored to give each vintage of this great Margaux the brilliance and complexity that its exceptional terroir gives it, always seeking a balance between the intrinsic quality of the vintage and the elegance of the wine.

Baron de Brane 2022 proves why it’s a classic of classic, surpassing some first-growth wines in quality. Unlike many wines that focus on rich berries, this one shows an elusive pine freshness from the start, reflecting the winemaker’s skillful management of ripeness and maceration. The powdery tannins, coupled with jujube, cherry, and licorice, gently lead to the finish, with a hint of saltiness lingering. This affordable yet delightful second label is a true gift to consumers—it’s a real win to get your hands on it.

Aromas of sweet cherries, blackberries, pencil shavings and barnyard introduce the 2022 Baron de Brane, a medium-bodied, sweet and somewhat carnal red that will appeal to readers with old-fashioned tastes.

2026-2036 93/100

The 2022 Baron de Brane aged for 12 months in oak barrels, 15% new. It has a pretty bouquet, featuring light blackcurrant and cedar scents. It’s understated at first but with fine delineation and gathering pace with aeration. The palate is medium-bodied with pliant tannins, a keen line of acidity, touches of black pepper and saline/black olive compote notes towards the finish. This should drink after just a few months bottling and give 12 to 15 years' of drinking pleasure.

The 2022 Baron de Brane is a gorgeous second wine. Merlot drives the blend, and that comes through in the wine's plush contours and forward, succulent fruit. Black cherry, plum, licorice and menthol all meld together in an effortless wine that is all charm. This is beautifully done.

Supple and lively, there's a nice energy to this with plump strawberry and raspberry fruit and a clean, almost salty tang to the mid palate. Tannins are well integrated, they're at the fore, and give the structure but have a lovely comforting texture. Juicy, clean, easy, well made, a lovely second wine with freshness, cool blue fruit and stony touches. Just a lighter version of everything...tannins, fruit, acidity. Harvest 7-19 September. Yield of 31.5hl/ha. 3.57pH. 1% Petit Verdot completes the blend.

The 2022 Baron de Brane, matured in 20% new oak, has a fairly straightforward nose: blackberry, raspberry fruit and a distant sea spray scent. The bottle served at the property demonstrates a little more mineralité. The palate is medium-bodied with grainy tannins on the entry. Balanced and fresh, this is not an intense Margaux. Pencil shavings and tobacco notes appear toward the finish. This will start drinking well after two to three years in bottle.

A blend of 65% Merlot, 4% Cabernet Franc, 30% Cabernet Sauvignon, and 1% Petit Verdot, the 2022 Baron de Brane has a pH of 3.57 and the press wine had 13.4% alcohol. It is deep garnet-purple in color and notes of fresh blackberries, wild blueberries, and blackcurrant jelly leap from the glass, giving way to nuances of chocolate mint and lavender. The medium-bodied palate delivers vibrant black fruit layers, with fine-grained tannins and bold freshness, finishing long and mineral-laced.

The 2022 Baron de Brane capture all of the richness of the year in its exuberant personality. Super-ripe dark cherry, plum, spice, leather and licorice offer notable radiance. This supple, enchanting Margaux should drink well with minimal cellaring. There is a bit of firmness in the tannin from the drought. Hopefully élevage will soften some of the edges.
