Marquis d'Alesme - Margaux 2022

Château Marquis d'Alesme, at the crossroads between East and West

At the heart of the Bordeaux region - precisely in Margaux - there is a wine that is a world in its own right. Under the watchful eye of a family, this wine full of character brings the Orient and the West together. Dragon scales and moon gates stand alongside columns and arcades in perfect harmony. A sea of vines stretches before us, with the Rising Sun on its horizon.

His taste for challenges and his eagerness to breathe new life into a potential treasure led him to acquire Château Marquis d'Alesme in 2006, a third Classified Growth in 1855, whose estate he undertook to overhaul completely.

Today, it's Nathalie Perrodo that embodies the values of her family on the wineries they own, Château Labégorce, Château Marquis d'Alesme and La Tour de Mons.

Even after bottling, Château Marquis d’Alesme remains robust and intense, and the smooth texture I anticipated hasn’t quite arrived. In particular, the large tannin content on the finish, though finely textured, still feels somewhat unresolved. From the perspective of Margaux’s Grand Cru Classé, it might lack some of the expected softness, but when compared to the overall performance of Médoc, this wine still demonstrates good complexity. It’s worth noting that the 2022 vintage has a rich aroma, with ripe dark fruit fragrances beautifully complemented by the delicate spice notes of cinnamon and licorice. If the tannins soften after aging, it will surely transform into an remarkable Margaux.

Austerity on the opening beats suggests that there is a long life ahead of this wine, and it has real energy, tight tannins, an electric quality to the dark berry fruits that give real lift and lusciousness. Great job here from Nathalie Perrodo and Marjolaine de Coninck CEO and technical director.

2027- 2042 94/100

The 2022 Marquis d'Alesme Becker has an intense nose with a mixture of red and black fruit, cedar and light iodine scents moving toward more floral aromas with aeration. This gains in terms of delineation with aeration. The palate is medium-bodied with silky-smooth tannins. This is one of the more modern Margaux wines, plush with veins of blueberry and vanilla toward the finish. Time will temper this Margaux, so be patient.

The 2022 Marquis d'Alesme is a heady, voluptuous wine. Dark cherry, plum, mocha, new leather, spice and blood orange all meld together in this succulent, racy Margaux. The 2022 offers tons of immediacy and overall appeal.

Another concentrated Margaux, the 2022 Château Marquis D'Alesme boasts a deep purple hue as well as brilliant aromatics of red and black fruits, smoked tobacco, chocolate, and wood smoke. Medium to full-bodied and nicely balanced, with plenty of mid-palate depth, it shows the ripe, sexy, opulent style of the vintage and will offer ample pleasure in its youth yet still age gracefully.

Glass-staining purple gives vibrancy and sets the tone for the stunning depths and character of the wine. This has so much texture, with rippling powerful cassis and blueberry fruit, slate and pummice stone, grips on through the palate, and like the best 2022s manages to be extremely ripe without being overly sweet, with a build up of tannins that gives structure without being drying. As it opens you get pulses of pummice stone minerality, and floral aromatics. Harvest September 15 to October 4. 60% new oak. Marjolaine de Coninck CEO and technical director. The blend given is planted, not as per final wine, allowing slight evolution over ageing, so these are ones to check back in on when in bottle.

Really quite expressive on the nose, rich blackcurrants, bramble fruits, perfumed violets and irises. Lovely supple texture, smooth and grippy, holds interest from the first sip, concentrated and intense, this has a great fully fruit forward aspect with ripe tannins that fill the mouth, chewy, lively, bright and fun. So fresh and friendly, I love this expression, more structured and serious - you can feel the depth and weight and sophistication, the Cabernet shines and I love the soft, salty dark chocolate and flint touches too. Sweet, sharp, great acidity, layered and forward. Long and still a bit lean which gives focus on the finish. Will be delicious and great to enjoy when ready. 2% Cabernet Franc completes the blend. 3.83pH.

The 2022 Marquis d'Alesme is a blend of 63% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot, 5% Petit Verdot, and 2% Cabernet Franc, aging in 50% new oak. Deep garnet-purple in color, it is a little closed to begin, requiring some coaxing to bring out fragrant scents of warm cassis, kirsch, and violets, leading to an undercurrent of fertile loam and cinnamon stick. The fruit on the medium-bodied palate is very bright and shiny, delivering compelling freshness along with fine-grained tannins, leading to a long and perfumed finish on this beautiful wine. 94-96+

The extraction of Château Marquis d'Alesme 2022 is quite prominent, and upon tasting, I felt as though 1kg of tannins melted on the palate. The nose is filled with sweet blackberries and blueberries, while the finish is accompanied by a large amount of spicy licorice and cinnamon. Although from the perspective of a Margaux classified growth, I feel it lacks a hint of graceful temperament, when viewed from the characteristics of a Médoc wine, this wine still exhibits an ideal sense of layers. I am largely looking forward to its performance after bottling.

Deep in color, with just a bit of swirling you find flowers, mint-leaves, black currants, plums, and cherry aromatics. On the palate, the wine is silky, creamy, and fresh. The fruits are sweet, energetic, and long. There is purity in the berries, length and elegance. The fruit produces an impact on the palate that lingers, building in intensity in the finish. The end notes get even better as you find a touch of peppery spice, mint, and chocolate-covered plums. The wine blends 63% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot, 5% Petit Verdot and 2% Cabernet Franc. 14% ABV. 3.65 pH. The harvest took place September 15 - October 4. Yields were only 22 hectoliters per hectare. Drink from 2026-2055.
