Du Tertre - Margaux 2022

Château du Tertre, a timeless elegance

Château du Tertre is located on one of the highest gravel ridges in the Médoc. Its history began in the 18th century with Pierre Mitchell, an Irish merchant who fell in love with the Bordeaux region and its wines. As the founder of Bordeaux's first glassworks, he fulfilled one of his dearest dreams by creating his own vineyard estate. Other famous families followed in his footsteps, including the Albada Jelgersma family, who purchased the estate in 1997 and made significant investments to allow this Grand Cru Classé of 1855 to express all of its elegance.

In March 2021, the Helfrich family took over to write a new chapter in the history of Château du Tertre. The family shares the same quest of excellence, which is a tradition in motion.

The 2022 vintage

"One of the better value of the En Primeur campaign" Wine Advocate, William Kelley

Cynthia Capelaerer, manager of the estate, tells you about the vintage:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=00SrJB5W2sQ&list=PLez2o_cjTYvjsySqCHnCZInBCJKEJAAQC&index=89

The Merlots are flavourful and fresh, a typical expression in the best years. The Cabernet Francs are elegant, refined, with a silky texture and a lovely tension. Concentration, rich fruit and powerful tannins characterise the Petit-Verdots. Finally, the Cabernet Sauvignons show incredible density and perfect balance between the very essence of fruit and their tannic backbone. These are undoubtedly the best Cabernets ever produced at the estate. Blending affirms a Château du Tertre 2022 magnificent for its ripeness, its density and its concentration.

Château du Tertre has always been known for its delicate body, but the 2022 vintage shows a more compact and robust structure. (The winemaker shared that, due to the high temperatures in 2022, they added 12-13% press wine.) In addition, this vintage bids farewell to the reductive aromas of the past, with lively floral and fruity fragrances emerging after swirling the glass—something never seen in previous vintages. Fresh strawberries, velvety blueberries, and the distinctive spiciness of cinnamon and cardamon provide an exciting new experience. This is the Château du Tertre I’ve been hoping for, and I eagerly anticipate its future exceptional performances.

The 2022 du Tertre has realized the potential it showed from barrel, offering up complex aromas of cassis, plums, pencil shavings and violets, followed by a medium to full-bodied, layered and velvety palate that's rich and textural, with lively acids, powdery tannins and a long, delicately minty finish. It's an unusual blend of 57% Cabernet Sauvignon, 23% Cabernet Franc, 15% Merlot and 5% Petit Verdot, which no doubt contributes to its singular style.

Medium to full intensity, leans into the vintage and shows a richer profile than it did En Primeur, when this depth of tannic power was fairly closed in. Black pepper spice, rosebud, peony, raspberry leaf, slate, sage, espresso and cocoa bean, this is a great quality du Tertre, with lift and concentration through the palate, understated finesse and it feels like it's going to go the distance. 60% new oak, Helfrich family. Single point upgrade.

Inky black and blue fruit, crushed stone, graphite, and smoky tobacco notes all emerge from the 2022 Château Du Tertre, a rich, powerful wine from this château that has medium to full-bodied richness, ripe, velvety yet building tannins, and a great finish. Based on 57% Cabernet Sauvignon, 23% Cabernet Franc, 15% Merlot, and the balanced Petit Verdot, it spent 18 months in 60% new barrels. Give bottles 4-6 years and enjoy over the following two decades.

2028-2042 94/100

The 2022 Château du Tertre has a slightly smudged nose compared to its peers. It's not as well defined as the Dauzac that I tasted before. That said, there are still quite precocious black cherry and blueberry scents to savor. The palate is medium-bodied, ripe and quite decadent with tarry black fruit tones, though the finish has sufficient freshness to keep it on track. This is a good choice if you like a more hedonistic Margaux.

This is very structured and intense with blackberries, currants, walnuts and chocolate. Fresh tobacco as well. Full-bodied, it has lovely fruit and a flavorful finish. A succulent and juicy red. One of the best ever from here. Leave it alone for two or three years. Best after 2028.

The 2022 du Tertre is a rich, dense wine. Inky dark blue/purplish fruit, lavender, licorice and sweet spice all meld together. This is an especially open-knit Margaux, particularly considering Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc drive the blend.

Bright and vibrant, lightly textured, more streamlined and linear than plush but the fruit has concentration and this has lovely freshness from start to finish. Some tension gives it the strictness but also the definition and detail. Well made but the softer acidity means it's missing a little persistence, there's no faulting the precision and focus throughout however. Harvest 8 September - 19 October. 3.6pH. Ageing in French oak, 60% new, 40% one year old. 5% Petit Verdot completes the blend.

Château du Tertre's wine has always been delicate and gentle, but in the 2022 vintage, its structure becomes more compact and powerful. The winemaker reveals that in the hot year of 2022, they increase the amount of press wine, up to 12-13%, which results in rich and robust tannins. In addition, this vintage bids farewell to past reductive notes, as after swirling the glass, it exudes fresh strawberries, velvety blueberries, and delicate herbal notes of cinnamon, allspice, providing a refreshing tasting experience. (Alcohol content 14%, pH 3.6, total acidity 3.3, IPT 78)

The 2022 Chateau du Tertre has an attractive bouquet with blackcurrant, bilberry and pastille-like purity. It opens nicely in the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with firm tannins on the entry, sous-bois and cedar aromas. It's linear toward the finish with moderate length. Maybe just a little conservative now, but I admire that correctness. It's Bordeaux, after all!

The 2022 du Tertre is deep garnet-purple in color. It needs some coaxing to bring out notes of plum preserves, warm cassis, and raspberry coulis, plus touches of garrigue and fragrant earth. The medium-bodied palate has impressive poise, with expressive black fruit and a soft texture, finishing with a lively lift.

A big, raw, exuberant, incredibly promising barrel sample, the 2022 Château Du Tertre reveals a vivid purple hue as well as full-bodied aromas and flavors of crème de cassis, spring flowers, and graphite. A blend of 57% Cabernet Sauvignon, 23% Cabernet Franc, and the rest Merlot and Petit Verdot, this terrific Margaux has fine tannins, beautiful balance, and a great finish. The cellar will be your friend here.

The 2022 du Tertre is packed with inky black fruit, gravel, incense, tobacco, licorice and chocolate. Opulent and intense to the core, the 2022 packs a serious punch. That comes through in tannins that are also pretty imposing. Drinking window : 2028-2042

Flowers, espresso, black cherries, mint, cocoa and plums come through in the nose. On the palate, the wine is medium-bodied, supple and fresh. The fruits are ripe, creamy and sweet, with balancing acidity, elegance and refinement. Drink from 2026-2045.

The 2022 du Tertre unwinds in the glass with aromas of dark berries, plums, licorice, vine smoke and petals, followed by a medium to full-bodied, deep and layered palate of uncommon depth and concentration that nevertheless retains all the estate's signature elegance. Polished and supple, it's a blend of 57% Cabernet Sauvignon, 23% Cabernet Franc, 15% Merlot and 5% Petit Verdot, which more or less represents this estate's varietal breakdown after its extensive replanting program is complete. This looks likely to emerge as the finest du Tertre in several decades, and it is sure to be one of the better values of the en primeur campaign. 92 - 94+
