Ceretto - Barolo Bricco Rocche - Barolo Ac. 2020

Ceretto , the iconic crus of Barolo and Barbaresco

Ceretto's story is that of a passion that began in 1937 with Riccardo Ceretto who started an activity that wrote a significant piece of history on the Langhe hills. In the 60s, his sons Bruno and Marcello joined the business with an innovative model for that time in the Piedmont: the importance of the soils. Inspired by the Burgundy, they thought that each vineyard has its own characteristics to reveal and must be considered as a "Cru" in its own right. Thus, they started mapping out the lands that produced the best wines and buying the vineyards. Today the lands have been handed down to their children but the philosophy remains: the land is the soul of Ceretto's wines.

Ceretto's family owns four wineries in the most suited areas of Langhe and Roero. The vineyards cover 160ha with 12ha in Barolo Appellation and 8ha in Barbaresco Appellation. Over the last two decades, aware of their responsibility to their precious lands, the family has embarked on a journey to adopt more environmentally sustainable farming methods and obtained the organic certification in 2015.

Bricco Roche, the finest vineyards of the Barolo denomination

Bricco Roche winery is located in Castiglione Falletto and was built in 1982. It was created to vinify grapes coming from the finest vineyards of the Barolo denomination, including Brunate from La Morra, Bricco Rocche and Cannubi San Lorenzo from Barolo.

Bricco Rocche is the smallest cru of Barolo and has been, since the mid-1970s the exclusive monopoly of the Ceretto's family. The vines cover 1,46 ha of lands on top of the hill. The position of the parcel is unique since it benefits from a 360-degree exposure. The wine that comes from this vineyard shows a level of elegance which is one of the highest of the appellation.

More ample, even more glacially pure – like a mountain stream with lots of energy. This sparkles like sunlight catching the fluidity of the flow. Loganberry. Assorted rose petals gently crushed. Sundried tomato and, on the palate, a little tapenade with the salinity that suggests. A little espresso coffee note (but very subtle). Ample, rich but hyper fluid and crystalline (the word to describe all of these Ceretto wines). This needs time but already deliciously plump and juicy, the tannins releasing waves of freshness on the very long and gradually tapering finish. Great terroir expression, once again, and, of course, a great terroir – what’s not to like. Find yourself a decanter, an armchair and a big glass.

A monopole 1.46ha vineyard completing this lovely trio of wines from the Ceretto family. Orange peel, rosebud and raspberry leaf, steely minerality, a little subdued suggesting higher structure than the other two in the lineup, offering balance and finesse, and a mouthwatering finish. Totally charming, with curls of sage and woodsmoke. Winemaking Alessandro Ceretto, from Barolo's smallest MGA.

This full-bodied, brawny wine is built for aging. Firm tannins wrap around red plums, iron, balsam and wet stones for a very dry, appetizing and bracing mouthfeel. The wine will soften and gain amazing complexity with time. Try from 2026 and beyond.

The 2020 Barolo Bricco Rocche is powerful, tannic and quite closed. This embryonic Barolo is going to need time to come together, as it is quite reticent today. It shows darker fruit, energy and more body than the Rocche di Castiglione. Scorched earth, leather, spice and crushed flowers linger on the driving finish.
