Bellevue Mondotte - Saint-Emilion Grand Cru 2021

Perse Latitudes

After a first life in retail marketing, Gérard Perse decided in the 90's to satisfy his passion for wine. His future will be written in Saint-Emilion, his favorite place. He acquired the châteaux Pavie, 1er grand cru classé "A" of Saint-Emilion, Pavie-Decesse, Monbousquet, grands crus classés of Saint-Emilion and then Bellevue-Mondotte, still in Saint-Emilion, and Clos Lunelles in Castillon, Côtes de Bordeaux.

Because wine is enhanced both by the location and the dishes associated with it, the Perse family bought the Hostellerie de Plaisance, a mecca of gastronomy and lifestyle, which later became the Hotel de Pavie and its double michelin-starred restaurant, the Table de Pavie. Since 2020, the collaboration with Yannick Alleno, a leader of French gastronomy, symbolizes a new dynamic and the great ambition carried by the family.

The 2021 vintage, a show jumping for experienced rider

Control of pace, lenght of stride and the trajectory necessary to guarantee a clear round.. the 2021 growing season often felt like taking part in a show jumping event. While anticipation and flexibility were essential factors, knowledge and experience in the vineyard were required to get through this vine cycle's tricky climatic episodes of this vintage. Just like the rider who trains and prepares his mount for a jumping event, it is also the result of precise and regular work carried out over time by loyal and passionate teams.

Bellevue-Mondotte, a gem in Saint-Emilion

Only a few vines away from the vineyards of Pavie and Pavie Decesse, the Perse Family fell in love at first sight and bought this 2-hectare jewel in 2001. Its vineyard benefits from a sumptuous terroir at the top of the famous limestone plateau of Saint-Emilion. Overlooking the Dordogne valley by more than 80m, this garden vineyard composed of old Merlot vines (64 years old on average) has all the qualities required for a high level viticulture: natural poverty of the soils, excellent sunshine thanks to the southern exposure, natural drainage of the land due to the slope, a vineyard protected from the northern wind and the risk of frost damages.
Benefiting from the expertise of the Pavie and Pavie Decesse teams, this terroir reveals its full potential through a wine of great delicacy, a rare and elegant concentrate of Merlot.

The 2021 Bellevue Mondotte, which lies next to Pavie-Decesse and likewise will be blended into Château Pavie beginning with the next vintage, has quite a ripe and ostentatious bouquet, perhaps more-so than I recall from en primeur. Potpourri and hints of

The 2021 Bellevue Mondotte, 100% Merlot, is fleshy, succulent and quite inviting. Plush contours and gorgeous, forward fruit give the 2021 tons of immediacy and appeal. Touches of rose petal, mint, mocha and a kiss of sweet French oak build nicely with time in the glass. The refined finish is a thing of beauty. This is the last vintage of Bellevue Mondotte, as the property was incorporated into Château Pavie with the 2022 vintage.

There is a very good start to this wine because the fruit is buoyant and energetic, and then, in a moment, it unfortunately finds itself drowning in oak. I would love to taste this wine with only 40% new oak! There is so much potential here, but I assume that this would not fit the ‘house style’. Having said this, we might be able to see more of the vineyard and the quality of the fruit, and it might also drink sooner. This was the vintage to step it back and let the singular purity of the Merlot shine. When will another 2021 come again? No one knows. 16.5+?

The 2021 Bellevue Mondotte offers an almost Pomerol-like nose of damp earth and chocolate as well as beautiful notes of tobacco, chalky mineral, graphite, and assorted red and blue fruits. It's another medium to full-bodied, balanced wine from this team that has a great mid-palate as well as ripe tannins. 94-96+

Bellevue-Mondotte 2021 wins people’s hearts with its irreplicable rich texture. Despite the Merlot being generally plain in this vintage, this wine still presents a grand body structure and outstanding concentration. Besides the later harvest, I think the old vines with deeper roots also played an important role. This is a muscular masterpiece. Fans of powerful wines should not miss it. Deeply colored, the wine already expresses flowers, minerals, dark red pit fruits, licorice and cocoa. On the palate, there is freshness, energy, ripe, dark berries, sweetness to fruits and salinity. There is a good concentration and depth of flavor. The fruits are juicy, ripe and sweet, with blackberries, citrus and cocoa with a touch of spice in the endnote. This is the second vintage produced from 100% old vine Merlot. 14.81% ABV. Drink from 2026-2050. 93-95

The 2021 Bellevue Mondotte is 100% Merlot, picked on October 4 and matured in 90% new oak. It has an initially rather sultry bouquet that requires encouragement, eventually revealing macerated small black cherries mixed with light iris flower petals. The palate is very structured and typically broad-shouldered, quite firm in the mouth but more pliant toward the finish, and currently showing a little more grace than its neighbor, Pavie-Decesse. 13.95% alcohol

The 2021 Bellevue Mondotte is sensual, creamy and enveloping. There is a real sense of breath and textural volume here, a reflection of the clay in these soils. Dark red cherry, plum, mocha, spice, new leather and menthol lend resonance to this super-expressive Saint-Émilion from the Perse family. In 2021, Bellevue Mondotte is 100% Merlot, with no Cabernet Franc. Flowering was uneventful and yields were 26 hectoliters per hectare, all two hectares of it.
