Arsac - Margaux 2023

The estate:

Regarded as one of the oldest wine estates in the Médoc, Château d'Arsac was established over nine centuries ago. Once the largest vineyard in the region, it nearly vanished in 1986. However, thanks to the visionary efforts of Philippe Raoux and his team, Château d'Arsac was reborn. Since its acquisition, the estate has been revitalized, and 54 hectares of its lands were reclassified as AOC Margaux. As a testament to this revival, Château d’Arsac was elevated to the status of 'Cru Bourgeois Exceptionnel' in 2020.

For more than three decades, art and wine have been deeply interconnected at the estate. Each new vintage is not only a vinous expression but also an inspiration for a new piece of art, which then adorns the estate’s gardens. Year after year, each vintage harmoniously blends taste with aesthetic appeal.

The 2023 d'Arsac has a well-defined bouquet with blackberry and raspberry fruit, cedar and sous-bois scents coming through with time. The palate is medium-bodied with sappy black fruit, gentle grip, quite linear in style with a fresh, quite structured finish.

This has good depth of dark fruit, offering black currants, chocolate and roasted spices. Almost full-bodied, it’s tight-grained and structured, but with polished tannins and a long, muscular finish. Try in 2028.

Medium-bodied, fresh, vibrant red berries with notes of dried flowers and red currants show in the nose, and on the palate. The finishes with a crispness to the red fruits on the palate, and in the backend of the endnote. Drink from 2027-2040. 88-90 Pts.

Unfussy and enjoyable, with silky textured tannins, fresh balanced acidities, blueberry and cassis fruits with edges of peony and iris fragrance that speak of the appellation, even while a lemongrass edge suggests full ripeness was skirted. Not the longest ageing Margaux but full of pleasure and easy to drink, no need to wait too long. Ageing 80% in French oak barrels, 55% new, with the rest in stainless steel. Philippe Raoux's last vintage. A Cru Bourgeois Exceptionnel at the last ranking, likely to be renewed with the new one later this year.

The 2023 d'Arsac has a rather conservative bouquet with blackberry, raspberry coulis and touches of licorice. It just requires a bit more delineation. The palate is medium-bodied with chewy tannins on the entry, though the acidity keeps this Margaux on an even keel. Nicely integrated oak emerges toward the finish. There's plenty of body here, it is just the aromatics that need to pull up their socks during barrel-maturation. There's potential, but the élevage will be crucial. This is not far behind the previous vintage.

Deep dark ruby, opaque core, purple reflections, delicate edge brightening. Delicate aromas of blackberry, black cherry, fine herbal savouriness, somewhat restrained bouquet. Medium-bodied, firm and complex, fine tannins, mineral and well per- sistent, shows certain ageing potential for maturity.

A fresh and slightly lean 2023 with a medium to light body, firm and chewy tannins and a medium finish.
