Dauzac - Margaux 2023

Château Dauzac, a one-block 45 hectares vineyard in Margaux

Château Dauzac, a Margaux ''Grand Cru Classé'' according to the 1855 classification, has the privilege of having a one-block 49 hectares vineyard: 45 hectares with the Margaux appellation and 4 hectares with the Haut-Médoc appellation. The vineyard of Dauzac is naturally protected due to its privileged geographical location: it is situated near the Gironde Estuary and in the heart of a 120-hectare expanse of meadows and forests.

In 2019, the Roulleau family acquired Château Dauzac, bringing it back into family ownership."

The 2023 Vintage

Climatic conditions:

The vines got off to an earlier start this year, with a magnificent bloom at the end of May. Mild, wet weather conditions necessitated careful monitoring and the use of herbal teas to reinforce the vines' defenses. Veraison took place at the end of July, followed by dry, hot weather in August and September, with several weeks of temperatures in excess of 40°C. We harvested our plots from September 11 to 27 under optimal weather conditions.

Cécilia Trimaille, technical director of Château Dauzac, talks about the vintage:

Tasting notes:

Powerful and silky, this full-bodied, fleshy 2023 has an attack dominated by bright, pure fruit, giving way to a full, silky palate where red fruit and menthol notes mingle. The tannins are well integrated. The texture on the palate is luscious and full.

Very good, showing some density with proper structure and intensity. Full-bodied and deep, with complex, integrated notes of cassis, dark cherries, cocoa powder and fine spices. Tight, structured and fine-grained, with a tense, lengthy finish. Really well-built. A blend of 66% cabernet sauvignon and 34% merlot. Better after 2027.

Très bon corps, fruit mûr, mais tannin encore un peu appuyé qui devrait se fondre avec les mois d’élevage. Le vin est dans l’esprit du millésime.

Ripe red and black fruits, sappy flowers, leafy herbs, and some subtle marine-like nuances (iron, salt) all emerge from the 2023 Château Dauzac, a pure, medium-bodied, supple, elegant Margaux that has a great texture, ripe tannins, and outstanding length.

Flowers, black cherries, espresso, tobacco, and cedar form the core of the character here. On the palate, the medium-bodied wine is soft, fresh, elegant, and round, with fresh, black currants, cherries, cocoa, and chalk from the mid-palate through to the finish. Drink from 2028-2050. 91-93 Pts.

Chewy tannins, liqourice, fennel, aniseed, chewy tannins, good push and pull, rises on the finish, juice underneath the construction, blueberry and rasppery fruits, a construction and texture than keeps you engaged, and slate texture to the tannins. Good stuff, one to look out for, an exceptional vintage at this estate. 90% French oak barrels for ageing, 65% new, 10% in amphora. 35hl/ha yields.

The 2023 Dauzac is a racy, heady wine. Although by no means the last word in complexity, Dauzac offers plenty of immediacy and overall appeal. Red/purplish-hued fruit, spice and floral notes open effortlessly. Dauzac is pretty intense texturally but not overdone, as it was a few years ago. It's a stylish Margaux to enjoy over the next 15-20 years.

Dark garnet, purple reflections, discreet brightening on the rim. Somewhat re- strained, dark cherries, some herbal savouriness, candied orange zest, figs un- derneath. Medium complexity, red berries, somewhat loosely knit, subtle tannins, lemony nuances in the finish, an uncomplicated style.

A solid and very energetic young red with aromas of blackcurrant and lemon peel. Medium-bodied with density and intensity of firm tannins and acidity. Racy and classic in many ways.
