Durfort Vivens (BIO-ORGANIC) - Margaux 2023

Gonzague & Claire Lurton Estates: A Story of Passion

Claire Villars Lurton and Gonzague Lurton, from the renowned Bordeaux winemaking families Merlaut and Lurton, took over their family estates in the 1990s: Château Durfort-Vivens (2nd Growth in Margaux), Château Ferrière (3rd Growth in Margaux), Château Haut-Bages Libéral (5th Growth in Pauillac), and Château La Gurgue (Margaux).

Pioneers in organic farming, biodynamics, agroecology, and agroforestry, they constantly seek new practices to reveal their terroir and produce exceptional wines.

Château Durfort-Vivens: A Pioneer Turned Benchmark

Gonzague Lurton inherited Château Durfort-Vivens in 1992 with the goal of restoring its 2nd Growth status. In 2009, he began converting to biodynamics to recapture the essence of the terroir. Today, the Durfort-Vivens vineyard, located in the Margaux appellation, is the only 1855 Classified Growth to be certified both organic and biodynamic at the same time. Its cellar also boasts the largest volume of amphorae in the world.

The 2023 vintage

At Durfort-Vivens, 2023 unquestionably joins the list of high-quality vintages produced in recent years. Despite unpredictable weather, the vineyard displays remarkable resilience. A rainy winter and a chilly early spring delay bud break, but a tropical spring and a dry late summer make up for it. Young vines and the most well-drained terroirs experience stress, but established vines adapt easily, resulting in a tasting experience with complex aromatic purity and perfect balance on the palate, revealing a wine that is bath powerful and smooth.

Aromas of blueberries, blackberries, black currants, lead pencil and flint, with some tar. Medium-bodied, showing round, fine tannins that deliver a creamy texture and a long, succulent finish. Great purity of fruit. Lightly chewy at the end. A blend of 92% cabernet sauvignon and 8% merlot. Needs three or four years to come around. Drink or hold.

Cassis, ripe tobacco, cedar pencil, chocolate, and smoky nuances all shine in the 2023 Château Durfort-Vivens, a gorgeously textured, medium to full-bodied, ripe, textured, straight-up velvety Margaux offering integrated tannins, plenty of classy background oak (it's resting in 70% new barrels), and a great finish. It's another brilliant Margaux in the vintage with tons to love.

Wonderfully fragrant aromatics that climb through the palate, this has the juice and power that 2023 does so well in the right hads, majoring on squid ink and cassis, with clear expansion through the palate, liqourice, sage, saffron, pomegrante, orange zest and salt-scrape. Harvest September 11 to October 4, 35hl/h yield, 3.66ph, 66% new oak, 33% amphoras for ageing. Right up there with the best of Margaux.

The 2023 Durfort-Vivens is a very pretty, understated wine. In 2023, Durfort is marked by a brighter profile than usual: red fruit, blood orange and flowers. Medium in body and persistent, with good energy and very fine balance, the 2023 is promising. Even though it’s showing a touch of oak at this stage, this layered and sumptuous offering is showing well.

Deep dark ruby, opaque core, purple reflections, delicate edge brightening. Fresh cassis, ripe blackberry, a hint of black cherry, delicate orange zest. Complex, pow- erful, full-bodied, fresh structure, fine tannins, delicate sweetness on the finish, firm and persistent, overall fresh and promising.

The 2023 Durfort Vivens is once again dominated by Cabernet Sauvignon, which represents 92% of the blend. Unwinding in the glass with aromas of minty cassis, plums and berries mingled with hints of pencil shavings and violets, it's medium to full-bodied, deep and layered, with good concentration, sweet tannins and a long, penetrating finish. With a pH of 3.66 and 13.7% alcohol, it's a resounding success.

This has very fresh, lively and almost al-dente fruit. It’s mouthwatering and juicy. Medium-to full-bodied, refined and seamless. Long, with a firm backbone of tannins that are very fine and polished. Crunchy and structured. Chewy at the end. 92% cabernet sauvignon and 8% merlot. From biodynamically grown grapes with Demeter certification.
