Siran - Margaux 2023

Château Siran, a remarkable Margaux wine

For 160 years, the history of Château Siran and that of the Miailhe family have been intertwined. Since 2007, Edouard Miailhe, 6th generation, presides over the destiny of the estate, situated in the Margaux appellation. He has undertaken an in-depth replanting program in the vineyard and a modernisation of the technical facilities. Each of the 25 hectares that the vineyard comprises is cultivated like a garden: practices on each plot are adapted according to the terroir's requirements.

Alain and Brigitte Miailhe - Edouard's parents - were great art lovers and were known for the series of labels designed by renowned artists that delighted all Siran wine lovers for over 20 years (1980-2005). The family decided to revive this tradition starting from the 2020 vintage.

The story of the 2023 vintage label

For the Siran 2023 label, we have chosen to illustrate the theme of Artificial Intelligence (AI), a technological revolution compared to that of electricity or the automobile. T he year 2023 marks a turning point in our understanding of the real capabilities of AI and its widespread adoption, as witnessed in particular by the viral proliferation of chatbots. With his artwork entitled “Learning the language of Gaia”, Italian artist Pietro Gallo has lent his enthusiastic vision to our label, depicting an artificial intelligence that does not seek to dominate, but rather to harmonise with nature.

The 2023 vintage: an elegant and generous expression of Siran's terroir

Despite the difficulties encountered, 2023 proved to be a generous year in terms of volume for Château Siran, confirming the vineyard’s remarkable ability to adapt to particularly tricky weather conditions. The first blends have only confirmed the team's optimism for a wine that harmoniously combines elegance and generosity, in the image of the Siran terroir.

The 2023 Siran has a well-defined and focused bouquet, blackberry and graphite, a little Pauillac in style. The palate is medium-bodied with slightly grainy tannins, but this is well balanced and definitely fresh and vital. Classically styled with good substance on the finish, it retains Margaux-like finesse and silky texture on the finish. Very fine.

An approachable Margaux with good fruit expression, showing berries, cassis, plums and elegant spices. A touch of cured meat as well. Medium-bodied with fine-grained tannins and a long, pretty cohesive finish. A blend of 49% merlot, 41% cabernet sauvignon and 10% petit verdot. Drink or hold.

Ripe currants, mulberries, spicy oak, and savory flower notes are just some of the nuances in the 2023 Château Siran, a medium to full-bodied, pure, balanced Margaux that has some background smoky oak, ripe yet certainly present tannins, and outstanding length. Its purity of fruit is top-notch.

The 2023 Siran is deep garnet-purple in color. It jumps from the glass with classic notes of cassis, redcurrant jelly, and cedar, followed by suggestions of dried herbs, tobacco, and stewed tea. The medium-bodied palate is bright and refreshing, with lightly chewy tannins and an herbal lift on the finish.

Soft, lush, lifted, and vibrant, the red, and black fruits are sweet, ripe, juicy, and long. There is concentration, and energy here, with a silky edge to the ripe, poloshed berries in the finish. Drink from 2028-2045. 91-93 Pts.

An enjoyably sculpted Siran, plenty of depth to the tannins, balanced, juicy and inky, with crushed pure liqourice root, bluebuerry and cassis pastille, rose petals and mint. This is delicious, with tension and a mouthwatering finish, great stuff from owner Edouard Miaihle and winemaker Marjolaine Defrance. 35% new oak for ageing. A buy.

The 2023 Siran is a rich, earthy Margaux. Cherry, tobacco, dried herbs and scorched earth add to an impression of rustic, wild power. This Siran has a ton of power, but incisive tannins give an impression of untamed intensity. Tasted two times.

The 2023 Siran, picked September 11 to 29, has a well-defined bouquet that is not as complex as the previous vintage. It is focused and delineated, with black fruit mixed with graphite and melted tar, almost Saint-Julien in style. The palate is medium-bodied with pliant tannins, quite minerally and lively without the depth of the 2022, yet rather elegant and refined on the finish. This constitutes a very gracious Margaux and as I tried second and third bottles towards the end of my trip, it just seemed to get better and better.

Dark ruby, opaque core, purple reflections, brightening at the rim. Delicate nougat, blackberries, ripe plums, fine oak nuances. Complex, with depth, a full-bodied, style, hints of chocolate and dried fruit, round tannins, remains persistent, has certain ageing potential.

Exhibiting aromas of dark berries and sweet new oak, the 2023 Siran is medium to full-bodied, dense and youthfully structured. It's a solid effort.

Wow. This is really well done with plenty of al-dente fruit character, bright acidity and firm, fine tannins that are already well integrated. Medium-bodied. Crunchy.
