This dry white from Sauternes showcases a rare freshness for the 2022 vintage. The aromatic lines are smooth and delicate, with ripe peach and banana pear exuding a warm sweetness, while the fragrances of grapefruit zest and kiwi add a refreshing liveliness to this wine. The mineral notes, which runs through the palate is vivid, offering a striking contrast to the roundness on entry of the palate. I’m delighted to find such energetic white wine with such a light color—there’s something endearing about this unexpected contrast.

The 2022 Opalie has fine mineralité on the open nose, with dew-speckled green apple mixed with pear and nectarine. The palate is balanced with Clementine and pear notes. It's not complex but has a pleasing waxy texture and decent length.

Unusual for a dry white from Sauternes to have so much Sauvignon Blanc in the blend, and this together with the Barsac soils means you get a joyful white that has plenty of contrast between rich lemon confit and pink grapefruit against lime blossom, white pepper, saffron, even traces of truffle. Harvest August 25 and 26. This was one of my top picks En Primeur, and it continues to impress. A buy.

The 2022 Opalie de Coutet is a delicate, aromatic Blanc Sec. White flowers, pear, mint, white pepper and chalk give this airy white lovely precision and focus to match its understated personality. I see this as more of an apéritif.

Sharp and lifted, a real intensity of lemon and lime with fragrant orange, grapefruit and touches of bitter rind that give interest and accents. Has a real sense of life with a delicate sweetness giving reference to Sauternes and mouthwatering acidity. Really lovely - persistent, forward, focussed, clean, thrilling and lively. Nice detail and moreish quality.

Structured dry white with clear slate character, saffran and white pear, savoury and mouthwatering, good stuff, with grip and personality. Harvest 25 and 26 August, after a year when only 72mm of rain fell in this part of Bordeaux from the end of April until the harvest, making 2022 one of the driest vintages since records began.
