Valandraud Blanc - Bordeaux 2023

Château Valandraud, a dream came true

Château Valandraud represents the culmination of the passion of wine enthusiasts Jean-Luc Thunevin and Murielle Andraud. Founded in 1991, Château Valandraud originated from a modest 0.6 ha vineyard, which was purchased with the couple's entire savings. This small plot, located in the Fongaban Valley near neighbors Pavie Macquin and La Clotte, inspired the estate's name—'Val' from valley and 'Andraud', Murielle's family name, a presence in the Saint Emilion registry since 1459.

Valandraud Blanc, a limited production

Always in pursuit of new challenges, Muriel Andraud and Jean Luc Thunevin decided in 2000 to cultivate white grape varieties adjacent to Château Valandraud’s vineyard. The white vineyard spans 1.5 hectares. The outcome is a work of 'haute couture' winemaking, with no expense spared to produce an exceptional white wine.

The 2023 vintage

The 2023 vintage of Valandraud Blanc displays a blend of Sauvignon Blanc and Sauvignon Gris, with a distinct aromatic profile. The wine's acidity provides a refreshing quality, while the aromatic components range from pink grapefruit to tropical fruit, with a savoury, sappy touch.

Vinified and aged 10 months in 80% new oak and 20% amphora, the 2023 Château Valandraud Blanc is more serious and concentrated than the Virginie, showing remarkable richness and depth. It offers a powerful profile with ripe stone fruits, melon, white flowers, honeysuckle, and crushed stone. Textured and beautifully layered, it’s surprisingly richer than the 2022 while maintaining freshness and balance.

Il y a de l’onctuosité en attaque, dynamisée par une suite en tension, la salinité donne de l’élan à la finale de style.

The 2023 Château Valandraud Blanc brings another level of depth and complexity, offering ripe citrus, honeyed melon, exotic flowers, mint, and a beautiful sense of minerality. With medium to full-bodied richness, it's beautifully balanced, has a supple, layered, elegant mouthfeel, and outstanding length. This wine doesn't get the recognition it deserves, and I would gladly put it up with the top whites coming from the appellation.

I love the purity in the fruits, there is intensity in the green apples, lemons, mangos, white peaches, and pineapples. The fruits are vivid, crisp, clean, and a touch salty, making you want to take another sniff, and sip, just for pleasure. The wine blends 53% Sauvignon Gris, 40% Sauvignon Blanc, 7% Semillon. Drink from 2025-2037. 94 Pts.

Fragrant and powerful white pepper, spiced pear, preserved lemons, fleshy white peach, structured and intense with a flash of heat. Good grip, a ton of impact and a white wine that will benefit from a few years of ageing. Valandraud has lower yields, and higher clay-limestone in the soils than 2nd wine Virginie de Valandraud, and is aged on the lees. It gives them distinct personalities, and this is the one for lovers of gourmet whites. Harvest September 8 to 18, 3.15ph, 80% new oak for ageing, 20% jarres.

The 2023 Valandraud Blanc is a rich, textured white with tons of appeal. Today, the aromatics are not totally defined, but that is not unusual for dry whites tasted from barrel. What impresses most about the Blanc is its overall presence and persistence. To be sure, this is one of the more extroverted dry whites in Bordeaux.
