Saint-Pierre - Saint-Julien 2023

Saint-Pierre, a must-have in Saint-Julien

In the world of wine, family is a much-flaunted value; many talk about it, yet few experience it quite like the Triauds. The story starts at the cusp of the Second World War, when Henri Martin, whose grandfather was a winemaker at Gruaud-Larose, acquired plots of vines from a number of classified growths in Saint-Julien, patiently building "his own" vineyard, Château Gloria. Work of a lifetime, Henri Martin devoted thirty years' hard work to finding its lustre. It has now become one of the Medoc's most famous "non-classified growths". Then, in the mid 70s, the family business was boosted by the arrival of his son-in-law, Jean-Louis Triaud. This arrival marked the beginning of a 40-year carreer for this charismatic man with a wonderful sense of humor. Henri Martin and Jean-Louis Triaud worked hard, side by side, to develop both family estates. Saint-Pierre, the linear, elegant, archetypal Medoc features among "the greatest value wines in the whole of Bordeaux".

Today, Jean Triaud, along with his wife, Caroline, and his brother-in-law, Orphée Amougou, is the third generation at the helm of the family estates. And the 4th is already on board. Thus, this family knows how to work collaboratively to preserve and to pass on this magnificent family legacy. In 2021, to achieve that goal, they have launched the conversion of the vineyard to Organic Farming.

The 2023 Saint-Pierre (Saint-Julien) has a very perfumed bouquet, a little more precision than Gloria this year with a touch more mineralité. The palate is medium-bodied with saturated tannins, nicely structured, gentle grip. A touch of white pepper emerges toward the finish with just the right amount of length. This is a very capable and quite delicious Saint-Julien. Excellent.

A very deep, youthful nose packed with cassis, blue fruit and graphite. A touch of violets too. Ample and round, with medium to full body and precise tannins. Structured and refined, lasting almost a minute. A blend of 80% cabernet sauvignon, 17% merlot and 3% petit verdot. Drink from 2027.

I continue to love this château, and they've done well their 2023 Château Saint-Pierre (Saint-Julien), a blend of 80% Cabernet Sauvignon, 17% Merlot, and 3% Petit Verdot, aging in 50% new oak. Red and black fruits, leafy herbs, iron, chocolate, and a kiss of background oak all emerge on the nose, and it hits the palate with medium to full-bodied richness, a pure, layered, elegant mouthfeel, ripe tannins, and outstanding length. It has the fresher, juicy style of the vintage but brings ample fruit and texture.

The 2023 Saint-Pierre is deep garnet-purple in color. It is quite closed to start, needing considerable swirling to bring out notes of fresh black and red currants, licorice, and charcoal, plus hints of dried roses and fallen leaves. The medium-bodied palate is tightly knit, with bright black and red berry flavors and fine-grained tannins, finishing fragrant. Very pretty!

Espresso, chocolate, black cherries, licorice, and flowers, form the nose. On the palate, the wine is round, soft, and polished, with ripe, chocolatey black cherries, licorice, and a touch of oak in the creamy finish. This is going to be delicious with just a year or two after it's released. Drink from 2028-2045. 92-94 Pts.

Enjoyable, well balanced, great inky depths of flavour, an enjoyable, sleek and confident St Julien, with an effortless finesse where you feel they aren't trying too hard to impress, just harnessing the drinkability of the vintage with its black fruit and liquorice character. Give it a few years, then sink into the pleasure of this wine. 45hl/ha yield, third year of organic conversion.

The 2023 Saint-Pierre (Saint-Julien) is packed with blackberry jam, gravel, lavender, dried herbs, spice and crushed rocks. There’s a ton of character here. Incisive tannins and bright acids pull it all together in style. Give this at least a few years to soften. Tasted two times.

The 2023 Saint-Pierre contains no Cabernet Franc and it will not be blended into the Grand Vin henceforth. This has a bit more animation and vigor than the Gloria, precise and fresh with plenty of black fruit and a lovely graphite note underneath. The palate is medium-bodied with pliant tannins but there is clearly more concentration compared to the Gloria (this was actually done partly in the winery). A touch of soy towards the finish completes an attractive Saint-Pierre.

Deep dark ruby, opaque core, purple reflections, brightening on the rim. Ripe dark cherry fruit, delicate notes of cassis, some nougat and orange zest. Juicy, subtle sweetness of ripe plums, round tannins, mineral and lemon finish, lingers long, a lively and salty food wine.

A strong effort, the 2023 Saint-Pierre unwinds in the glass with aromas of cassis, dark berries and incense, framed by a deft touch of new oak. Medium to full-bodied, rich and layered, with good mid-palate density, powdery tannins and lively acids, it's a classically proportioned Saint-Julien that will age with grace. The blend is 80% Cabernet Sauvignon, 17% Merlot and 3% Petit Verdot.

Very refined and classy, with ultra-fine tannins and blackcurrant and hazelnut character, suggesting very pure fruit and precise picking times. Medium-bodied and chewy, yet caressing.
