Connetable Talbot - Saint-Julien 2023

4th Médoc Grand Cru Classé, Château Talbot comprises 110 hectares of a single vineyard in the heart of the Saint-Julien commune, an outstanding appellation as it counts no fewer than 11 classified growths. The Bignon-Cordier family manages the estate since 1918.

Connétable, the second wine of the estate, saw the light of day in the sixties. It has benefited over the years from all the care given to the vineyard and increasingly severe selections.
Like its elder brother, Connetable is a classic, elegant wine with a clear, well-designed structure and a long, fresh finish.

The 2023 Connetable Talbot has a clean and fragrant nose with redcurrant and cranberry fruit. Simple but effective. The palate is medium-bodied with grainy tannins. Nicely balanced with just the right amount of structure, leading to a peppery finish, this Deuxième Vin should drink well for up to seven or eight years.

Subtle citrus and herbs to the cherries and plums. Perfumed and round, with medium body and fine tannins. Very well-balanced. A blend of 41% cabernet sauvignon, 56% merlot and 3% petit verdot. Already approachable, but will hold for the next decade or so.

Grilled campfire and vanilla bean aromatics that make the body of this wine ripe and welcoming without being overly sweet, this has character and Left Bank typicity, a little short but plenty to sink into.

The 2023 Connetable Talbot contains some Petit Verdot in the blend, as two plots were deselected from the Grand Vin. It has a well-defined bouquet, predominantly black fruit laced with tobacco and touches of sous-bois. There is a sorbet-like freshness here. The palate is medium-bodied with a crunchy entry. A linear and nicely focused Connetable in the making, this shows a little more depth on the finish compared to recent vintages. Fine.

A strong effort, the 2023 Connetable de Talbot reveals aromas of plums, berries, dark chocolate and pipe tobacco, followed by a medium to full-bodied, fleshy and mouth-filling palate. It will offer a broad and satisfying drinking window.
