Saint Georges Cote Pavie - Saint-Emilion Grand Cru 2023

The estate:

Château Saint-Georges Côte Pavie is a family property bought by Jules Charoulet in 1873. Today, the 5th generation still manages the estate, represented by Philippe Masson. In 2016, he started working with Stéphane Derenoncourt and his team to help them in their vinification. In December 2019, they started to build a new cellar, a reception and a tasting center it was completed about a year later.

The estate is located between Château Pavie and Château La Gaffelière. Its 5-hectare large vineyard is in one piece on the Pavie hillside.

A precise and focused red with aromas of blackberries, blueberries, limestone and a hint of graphite. Medium-bodied with firm and chewy tannins. It shows dark earth and chalk, with a hint of salt at the end. Drink in three or four years.

The 2023 Château Saint Georges (Côte Pavie) comes from the clay and limestone hillside just outside of the village (not far from Chateau Pavie) and is based on 80% Merlot and 20% Cabernet Franc. Spicy black cherries, red plums, leafy herbs, graphite, and a hint of chocolate all emerge on the nose, and it hits the palate with medium to full-bodied richness, a plush, layered mouthfeel, beautiful tannins, and a great finish. It's very much in the style of the vintage with its forward, charming style, but this is beautiful stuff.

Deep garnet-purple in color, the 2023 Saint Georges Cote Pavie sashays out with fragrant notes of rosebud tea and peonies leading to a core of juicy plums, black raspberries, and anise. The medium-bodied palate is soft and plush, with a refreshing backbone and long fragrant finish. The blend is 80% Merlot and 20% Cabernet Franc.

St-Georges Côte Pavie (St Emilion; 80% Merlot; 20% Cabernet Franc; a final yield of 30 hl/ha; tasted at the Association des Grands Crus Classés at Dassault). Incense, wild blueberry, bramble, a little graphite, a hint of wild thyme. Lovely texture, this is a wine that has gained considerably in elegance in recent vintages. The tannins are svelte and fine-grained, they sculpt the flow of the wine over the palate and this has a deal of forward momentum despite the not inconsiderable density. Nicely done. Not the most complex or even age-worthy of the wines of the Côte de Pavie but the best recent vintage of this I think and a sign I suspect of things to come.

Savory black cherries, herbs, and licorice with a floral edge in the nose deftly moves to a vibrant, medium-bodied, sweet, chewy, round center of sweet, red berries, chocolate, and espresso. The wine offers an open, forward approach. The wine blends 80% Merlot, with 20% Cabernet Franc. Drink from 2026-2038. 92-94 Pts.

Powerful, well controlled, cocoa bean, freshly cut herbs, black tea, sculpted tannins, with grilled mandarin peel and campfire smoke. Well defined tannic grip, a little austere right now but with a ton of promise.

Aromas of raspberries, strawberries, dark wild berries and flowers introduce the 2023 Saint-Georges Côte Pavie, a medium to full-bodied, long and fleshy wine with powdery tannins and a long, calcareous and fresh finish. It's a blend of 80% Merlot and 20% Cabernet Franc matured in 45% new barrels, 40% one-year barrels and 15% in amphorae. As usual, a great success.

A racy wine with pure blackberry and crushed-stone character that tastes really minerally and salty. Medium body. Very beautiful tannins coat the center-palate. 80% merlot and 20% cabernet franc.
