Monbousquet - Saint-Emilion Grand Cru 2023

Château Monbousquet, Saint-Emilion Grand Cru Classé

After a first life in retail marketing, Gérard Perse decided in the 90's to satisfy his passion for wine. His future will be written in Saint-Emilion, his favorite place. He acquired the châteaux Pavie, 1er grand cru classé "A" of Saint-Emilion, Pavie-Decesse, Monbousquet, grands crus classés of Saint-Emilion and then Bellevue-Mondotte, still in Saint-Emilion, and Clos Lunelles in Castillon, Côtes de Bordeaux.

In 1993, Chantal and Gérard Perse bought this historical estate. Its 34-hectare large vineyard is located on an exceptional terroir which, like Cheval Blanc or Figeac, has the characteristic of having partially gravelly soils. This typicity, offering warm soils, allows the Cabernets to flourish. Thus each vintage of Monbousquet has a significant proportion of Cabernet Franc and Cabernet-Sauvignon.

The 2023 Vintage:

94-95 pts - "The freshness is verypresent, together withrichness and minerality." - James Suckling
92-94 pts - "Medium to full-bodied, with a round, supple, layeredmouthfeel and agreat finish" - Jeb Dunnuck

The 2023 Monbousquet was tasted on two occasions. It has quite a dense bouquet with more black than red fruit, mixed with melted tar and pencil-box aromas. It is what you might call “full throttle.” The palate is medium-bodied with grainy tannins. Quite firm in structure, for me, this needs to muster a bit more precision on the finish and assimilate the oak better, they protrude a little too much vis-a-vis its peers.

Spicy and toasty oak, blackberries, roasted spices, dark chocolate and ripe dark cherries on the nose. Lush and almost full-bodied, with compact, chewy tannins and a flavorful palate. Slightly less bold in the past with a bright fruit underneath. 60% merlot, 30% cabernet franc and 10% cabernet sauvignon. Try from 2028.

The 2023 Château Monbousquet is another deep, rich, voluptuous wine from this team. Rocking levels of ripe red and black fruits, smoked tobacco, chocolate, and subtle spicy notes all define the aromatics, and it's medium to full-bodied, with a round, supple, layered mouthfeel and a great finish.

Monbousquet (Saint Émilion; 65% Merlot; 20% Cabernet Franc; 15% Cabernet Sauvignon; a final yield of 28.8 hl/ha; pH 3.73; 14.2% alcohol; tasted at Pavie with Olivier Gailly). Rich and plump, but with less oak and more fruit intensity than in the past. Dark berries, cherries, brambles, nutmeg and cinnamon spice, a little pot pourri. We have, too, that distinct ferrous and crushed rock and graphite minerality that comes from the gravel and crasse de fer terroir. Fine and quite crystalline, but with significant extraction. That renders this a little un-delineated in the mid-palate but it is certainly finer than it used to be with very grainy, beady tannins. A vin de garde, the oak well-restrained and well-integrated.

Flowers, licorice, black raspberries, and black cherries open the perfume. The wine has a depth of flavor, the fruits are fresh, as well as ripe, sweet, and long, with lift and vibrance in the finish, which allows the cream-textured wine to linger. The wine blends 65% Merlot, 29% Cabernet Franc and 15% Cabernet Sauvignon, 14.15% ABV. Drink from 2028-2040-2042. 92-94 Pts.

Bitter black chocolate on the opening beats, along with espresso and rosemary. There are juicy ruby fruits alongside, and estate signature. Gravelley soils with sandy and sandy clay, most impacted by the heat spikes of the vintage of all the Pavie wines this year, harvest september 13 to 23. 50% new oak, with the rest on one year.

The 2023 Monbousquet is packed with blue/purplish fruit, spice, lavender, mocha and gravel notes. The 2023 is an especially serious Monbousquet with bright acids and vibrant tannins that lend notable energy throughout. This is another fine showing from the Perse family.

Deep dark ruby, opaque core, purple reflections, delicate edge brightening. Ripe, dark berry fruit, sweet plum, a hint of nougat, delicate dried fruit nuances, fine notes of oak are in the background. Complex, juicy, elegant, black cherry, vivid, integrated tannins, mineral on the finish, good persistence, a full-bodied food companion, salty aftertaste, good certain ageing potential.

The freshness is very present, together with richness and minerality, black fruits and black olives. Hint of salt, too. Medium to full body with layers of ripe tannins and a juicy finish. Well done. Lightly salty.
