Rouget - Pomerol 2024

Château Rouget, the expression of the great terroirs of Pomerol

Located near Eglise-Clinet, Petrus and Le Gay, Château Rouget covers 42 acres that stretch across the gentle slopes of the Pomerol’s plateau. Two-thirds of the vineyard are located around the estate. Château Rouget also includes beautiful plots facing Petit Village, Le Pin and Trotanoy.

The history of Château Rouget dates back to 1700, which makes it one of the oldest estates in Pomerol. In 1992, the Labruyère family found the estate and fell in love with Pomerol, which is known as the most Burgundy-like appellation in Bordeaux. Over the last vintages, the teams, led by Edouard Labruyère and Antoine Ribeiro, have been working on recovering Rouget’s prestige, as it was once recognized as one of the best Pomerol wines of the 19th century.

The wine’s quality is constantly improving which has made it one of the best value for money crus of the appellation.

Lovely aromatic intensity. Delicate, this is certainly more focussed on finesse as opposed to density but there’s an element of verticality with a layered effect of creamy tannins and acidity. This feels restrained though, they could have pushed this much further and didn’t and this is better for it. Good effort.

Deep garnet-purple colored. Gives up scents of stewed red plums, baked strawberries, and fried herbs, plus suggestions of black olives and pepper. The light to medium-bodied palate is soft and refreshing with savory-laced red berry flavors and an herbal lift on the finish.

From argilo-graveleux soils and based on 85% Merlot and 15% Cabernet Franc, brought up in 30% new oak for 16 months, the 2024 Château Rouget has a distinctly herbal component in its darker fruits as well as peppery herbs, graphite, and damp earth-like nuances. It's beautiful on the palate and has a ripe, layered mouthfeel, plenty of mid-palate depth, and a great finish. It's a singular, impressive, beautiful wine that I'd be happy to own.

The 2024 Rouget has a pure bouquet with blueberry and cassis scents, quite floral and almost Margaux-like in style. The palate is medium-bodied with pliant tannins and fine acidity, harmonious though not complex. Because of that, this Rouget has a fine natural "flow" and should provide 12 to 15 years of drinking pleasure.

The 2024 Rouget is a standout. Floral top notes meld into a core of red-toned fruit, mocha, spice, new leather and cedar. The aromatics are so central in the wine's personality. Silky, polished tannins add to an overall impression of finesse. More than anything else, Rouget impresses with its balance.

Floral in nature, with plums, black cherries, licorice, and cocoa in the nose. Medium-bodied, fresh, supple, and vibrant, the fruits are ripe, clean, and soft, the elegant finish, wits chocolate, and cherry character lingers. The wine blends 85% Merlot, with 15% Cabernet Franc. Drink from 2027-2042.

I’ve always believed that the soul of Pomerol only reveals itself through lusciously sweet fruit – and in the cool 2024 vintage, finding such ripeness was nearly impossible. And yet, Château Rouget turns the tables with quiet grace. It begins with a whisper of “sweetness” that gently stirs the palate, followed by the final tender echo of Merlot’s charm, telling the story of this challenging vintage in hushed tones. With each sip, a picture of springtime gradually unfolds – serene, vivid, and full of life.

Deep dark ruby, opaque core, purple reflections, delicate edge brightening. Delicate aromas of fresh plum and fig, candied orange zest, a hint of vanilla. Juicy, elegant, ripe, sweet fruit at the core, fine acid structure, salted lemon finish, red berry aftertaste.
