Clos de l'Oratoire (BIO-ORGANIC) - Saint-Emilion Grand Cru 2024

The Von Neipperg Family, a history intertwined with winegrowing

Stephan von Neipperg is the guardian of some 800 years of winemaking tradition, and today manages with passion and talent the various Bordeaux estates acquired by his father in 1971: Château Canon La Gaffelière and La Mondotte, 1er Grands Crus Classés B de Saint-Emilion, Clos de l'Oratoire, Saint-Emilion Grand Cru Classé, Clos Marsalette, Pessac-Léognan, and Château d'Aiguilhe, Castillon - Côte de Bordeaux.

Ably assisted by a team of professionals, he has brought the wines from these châteaux to the pinnacle of quality. The upcoming generation, also deeply attached to the terroir, is preparing to perpetuate the family vocation...!

Clos de l'Oratoire, Saint-Emilion Grand Cru Classé

Clos de l’Oratoire, located on Saint-Emilion's northeast slope, has 13 hectares of vines. The terroir of Fronsac molasse, consisting of a layer of sandy soil and a clay subsoil, is ideally suited to Merlot (80% of the vines).

Meticulous work is done all year long to maintain quality in the vineyard.

The property is certified organic since 2020

Perfumed blackcurrant fruit on the nose, inky blue tones, some salty minerality and touches of vanilla and clove. Bright but quite lean and mineral straight away, this has a good structure, filling with a really chalky texture. It feels concentrated and the flavour linger a long time on the finish - blackcurrant, plum and soft cedar spices. It’s super approachable and juicy to begin with then a tiny bit strict on the finish. Again, there’s precision and focus but this needs to soften a touch more. Livelines is there. Ends salty. Ageing 25% new oak barrels.

Deep garnet-purple colored. Features notes of juicy black and red plums and mulberries, leading to hints of black pepper, underbrush, and damp soil. The light to medium-bodied palate delivers a sturdy texture of lightly chewy tannins with bags of freshness and a peppery lift on the finish.

(St Emilion; 80% Merlot 20% Cabernet Franc; a final yield of 40 hl/ha; 13% alcohol; tasted at Canon-La-Gaffelière with Stephan and Ludovic von Neipperg). Black cherry. Blackcurrant. A little blueberry and that stalky leafiness of the Cabernet Franc, above all with gentle aeration in the mouth. Here we move from sheets of silk to cashmere, with a little more density and depth and with the calcaire tannins entering between the strata. I love the uplift of sapid freshness that I find in the mid-palate. This is vibrant and very pure if perhaps lacking a little complexity in comparison with the 2020 or 2022.

Blackberries, darker cherries, sappy herbs, violets, and spicy wood notes all shine in the 2024 Clos De L'Oratoire, a medium-bodied, pure, focused, juicy Saint-Émilion that has a terrific sense of minerality on the finish. It plays in the medium-bodied, fresh style of the vintage yet is charming, balanced, and incredibly well made.

The 2024 Clos de l'Oratoire was picked September 24 to October 8 at 40 hl/ha and matured in 25% new oak. It has a light bouquet with briar, cranberry pencil box aromas. This at least has more character and presence than the Clos Marsalette or d'Aiguilhe. The palate is medium-bodied with sappy red fruit and delicate tannins, though it does attenuate toward the finish and leaves you wanting more.

The 2024 Clos de l'Oratoire is a very beautiful Saint-Émilion. Dark, layered and vibrant, Clos de l'Oratoire has a lot to offer. The 2024 is a bit more on the refined side, a reflection of both the vintage and a stylistic shift that has been in place for a number of years. Lavender, spice, licorice and espresso weave into a core of blue-toned fruit. Silky tannins wrap it all up in this stylish Saint-Émilion.

Chocolaty plums, flowers, tobacco, and red pit fruits fill the nose. Medium-bodied, elegant, and fresh, on the palate, the wine focuses on its core of vibrant, red berries, sweetness, and lift on the mid-palate, and in the finish. The wine blends 80% Merlot, with 20% Cabernet Franc. 13% ABV. Drink from 2027-2038.

A blend of 80% Merlot and 20% Cabernet Franc, the 2024 Clos de l'Oratoire reveals aromas of cassis, dark berries and spices intertwined with stemmy notes. Medium-bodied, firm and lively, it's framed by brittle tannins and an energetic finish. While not as dense as previous vintages, it retains a punchy personality that speaks well of the vintage’s freshness.

Dark ruby, purple reflections, broad rim brightening. Fine red heart cherry fruit, delicate hints of currant, with candied orange zest in the background. Medium body, mineral, fine cherry, mineral-salty texture, finesse-rich finish, a lively companion at the table.
