Petit Village - Pomerol 2023

Petit Village is set to be Grand

Opportunities to buy into Pomerol's premium sites are few and far between. So when the Moulin family (Galeries Lafayette group) co-owner of Château Beauregard, had the opportunity to acquire Château Petit Village, a stunning estate on the opposite side of the road, they seized it both hands. Since June 2020, this magnificent 10,5ha vineyard, located on the Pomerol plateau, and among the appellation's most historically-acclaimed terroirs, surrounded by names as prestigious as Vieux Château Certan, La Conseillante, Trotanoy and L'Evangile, has seen fresh impetus from its new owners and new managing director Vincent Priou.

"Everyone knows the quality of the terroirs at Petit Village, which in the period after the war was considered among Pomerol's Top 3 estates. Petit Village is a garden, requiring endless, meticulous attention. There are certain aspects we need to get right, which is why we are going to step it up a gear". Vincent Priou, managing director of Châteaux Beauregard and Petit Village.

Since 2020, Vincent Priou has focused on 4,5ha of vines at the "heart of the terroir" in a bid to enhance quality of Petit Village. The results were quite spectacular for the wine. The stage was set. Now the team intents on continuing to develop the estate: plans to remodel the vineyard, conversion to organic, siginificant renovations to improve the winery facilities and the reception area. The message is loud and clear: Petit Village is set to be Grand.

The 2023 Vintage:

"Year after year, Château Petit-Village confirms its renewal by remarkably portraying its exceptional clay terroir. This 2023 expresses a beautiful balance, combining great aromatic complexity, ripe and silky tannins, and, on the finish, a freshness and persistence worthy of the greatest terroirs of Pomerol.” Vincent Priou, General Director

This is juicy, complex and refined. Aromas of dark chocolate, bark and a decadent twist of dark mushrooms and ash. Medium- to full-bodied with flavors of citrus and berries and a lasting finish that goes on and on. Tannins are assertive but creamy and silky. 65% merlot, 25% cabernet franc and 10% cabernet sauvignon. Drink or hold.

The 2023 Petit-Village emerges from the eastern blocks on the property—in other words, those on the Pomerol plateau. Black cherry, chocolate, espresso, licorice and spice infuse the 2023 with notable richness. This is an especially potent, bold style built on textural opulence and breadth. The Cabernet signatures are pretty strong here. Tasted two times.

The 2023 Petit-Village was picked beginning with the younger vines on September 6 and finished on September 20 just before the light rains. Yields were 36hL/ha and the wine matured in slightly less new oak this year (40%, 20% of which is 500-liter barrels). The nose is quite straightforward and just misses the complexity I have found amongst its peers. It displays pleasant black cherry and bilberry fruit and a touch of sous-bois, but it doesn't quite evolve in the glass. The palate is medium-bodied and framed by supple tannins, with plenty of graphite-tinged black fruit and quite a structured finish. It should mellow during its élevage. This is a case where I feel that they could have held on a little longer with respect to the Cabernets in order to obtain that extra degree of ripeness and complexity.

Deep dark ruby, opaque core, purple reflections, delicate edge brightening. Delicate- ly floral, fresh cherry fruit, a hint of plum and nougat, with candied orange zest in the background, an inviting bouquet. Complex, juicy, dark forest berries, fresh acidity, a hint of chocolate on the finish, remains persistent, good length and certain ageing potential.

Aromas of dark wild berries, cassis, chocolate, spices and coniferous forest preface the 2023 Petit Village, a medium to full-bodied, layered and textured wine with a rich, concentrated core of fruit framed by a structured texture, powdery tannins and concluding with an oak-inflected finish.
