Gazin - Pomerol 2023

Château Gazin, a must-have in Pomerol

Château GAZIN, which was a hamlet in the 18th century, is probably located on the site of the “Hospital of Pomeyrols”, built by the knights to receive pilgrims on the Santiago de Compostela route.

Louis Soualle, great-grandfather of the current owners, the Bailliencourt family, acquired Château GAZIN at the beginning of the 20th century. Its descendants  represent today the 5th generation of vineyard owners.

Today, the vineyard of Château GAZIN covers an area of 26 hectares in one piece located on the high terrace of the Pomerol terroir; which makes it one of the largest famous growths of the appellation. The vines of Château Gazin are located near prestigious estates such as Pétrus and Château La Fleur-Pétrus.

Tasting notes

Beautiful garnet-red colour. The ripe fruit nose is accompanied by hints of peony, following through to the palate and underpinned by notes of cherry and blueberry. Lovely freshness, resulting in a perfectly balanced wine with a long-lasting finish. An elegant wine, developing silkiness and complexity with age.

The 2023 Gazin has a relatively light nose with black plum and briar scents. I would have preferred more fruit intensity, more vigor. The palate is medium-bodied with svelte tannins. Lovely mouthfeel here, poised and focused with an underlying mineralité that comes through on the finish. What you might call a "capable" Pomerol that I wager will be delicious at several years of age.

The subtle tension to this classic wine is impressive. Aromas of blueberries, minerals and hints of hazelnuts and bark. A medium-bodied palate with fine tannins and a caressing and polished texture. 88% merlot, 7% cabernet franc and 5% cabernet sauvignon.

Red, blue, and black fruits, sappy green herbs, and some floral notes all emerge from the 2023 Château Gazin, a more medium-bodied Pomerol with an upfront, complex, lively profile. It's solid in the vintage, has ripe tannins, and bright yet integrated acidity. The blend is 89% Merlot, 7% Cabernet Franc, and 4% Cabernet Sauvignon.

A blend of 89% Merlot, 7% Cabernet Franc, and 4% Cabernet Sauvignon, the 2023 Gazin has a deep garnet-purple color. It is a touch subdued to begin, needing a little patience to discover subtle notes of redcurrant jelly, fresh plums, and cedar, leading to hints of pencil lead and bay leaves. The medium-bodied palate has fine-grained tannins and bright acidity supporting the delicate red and black fruit flavors, finishing with a savory lift. I like this quiet intensity!

There is richness, energy, layers of fruit, and finesse here. The fruits are ripe, silky, vibrant, and fresh. The truffle, flower, and chocolate accents add to the experience. Give the wine just a few years to age, and this will be a strong Pomerol wine. The wine blends 89% Merlot, 7% Cabernet Franc, and 4% Cabernet Sauvignon. Drink from 2028-2042. 92-94 Pts.

One of those benchmark estates that rise above the individual character of the year, imposing their own personality that remains true to itself. Good texture here, enjoyable depth and balance, peony floral character, cocoa bean and slate, with tannins that give sinew and tension to the palate. Good stuff, will age.

The 2023 Gazin is deep, layered and exceptionally well-balanced. All the elements are in the right place. Dark red/purplish fruit, spice, leather, tobacco and dried herbs all meld together in a seamless, super-expressive Pomerol that hints at a very bright future. This is a fine follow up to the 2022.

The 2023 Gazin has a typical bouquet for this Pomerol estate—always understated, and one where you have to spend time coaxing aromas. Eventually, it offers predominantly black fruit laced with black truffles and light earthy scents. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannins. It veers more toward red fruit laced with white pepper on the cohesive and classically styled finish. This is maybe not a long-term Gazin, but it has an air of sophistication.

Dark ruby, purple reflections, brightening on the edge. Ripe plum fruit, a hint of dried fruit, some nougat, candied orange zest. Juicy, round, ripe cherries, round tannins, fine acidity, mineral, already accessible, harmonious and approachable, a versatile food wine.

Revealing aromas of dark berries, cassis and cherries, the 2023 Gazin is medium to full-bodied, firm and compact, with a dense core of fruit framed by chewy tannins.

Very classy, with a crushed-stone and terra-cotta highlight to the blackberry, chocolate and hazelnut character. It’s medium-bodied with a personality that grows on the finish and delivers intensity and length at the end. Very long. Very structured. We will see which is better, 2022 or 2023.
